THE IRONSAND INDUSTRY.

ADDRESS AT HAWERA. A lecture was given at the Hawera Winter Show on Saturday niglit by Mr. J B. Laurenson (chairman of tlie N.Z. Ironmasters' Association, Ohristehureh), on tlie iron industry of Xow Zealand, with special reference to the manufacture of pig-iron from Taranaki ironsand. Bis Worship the Mayoi (Mr. Dixon) presided. Mr. Laurenson on opening his remarks referred to the extraordinary progress of all those countries which had developed tliei iron industry. He paid a compliment to the late Mr. K. M. Smith and ether investigators who had spent their time and money in trying to solve the ouestion of commercially treating the ironsands of Taranaki. He quoted, f.gures showing the enormous value of our imports in iron and steel and its manufactures, which reached the total of £4,500,000 per annum, at Customs values, and stated that this amount was paid by the people every year, plus, possibly, 23 to 33 A per cent. He then touched upon the company which had been formed for the purpose of manufacturing pig-iron and ultimately steel, from Taranaki ironsand, and stated from his personal knowledge that after two years of incessant investigation and the expenditure of over .€OOIIO, success had at last been achieved. The process adopted, he (xplaiued, \vn* simple and- effective, lie stated that on close investigation he was perfectly satisfied that a first-grade pig-iron could be produced at a cost of £3 pei ton, which would give a handtome profit on pre-ivar prices in the Dominion. He pointed out the advisability of the people of Taranaki coining forward and supporting mi industry which had made the leading countries of the world: A demonstration on a small scale was "iven of the manufacture of fcrro-eoke, on the Hesketh principle, which attracted great interest. A vote of thanks to the Mayoi and Mr. Laurenson was carried with app'ause, and the excellence of the display of manufactured articles from the pigiron was highly commented on.
