CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. e ordinary meeting of the Clifton County Council was held at tho County office, Waitara yesterday, when there were present: Crs. A. M. Bower (chairman), K. T. Hicks, W. Old, R. 11. Piggott, H. Sanders, and S. J. Kennington. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr. C. F. Dorsctt (County engineer) reported as follows: Waihi Riding.—The Main road lias required a good deal of attention for repairs and existing metal supplies are being rapidly used up. The work of regrading the Ohangai Hill has commenced, but it is not advisable to proceed in this weather. Tenders close .o-day foi the boulder supply at the Waipajia depot, and the contractors have been busy stripping the beach for the Turangi depot. Tikorangi Riding.-The usual maintenance work has been carried out, and metal is ready in Freeling's pit for repairs. The properties adjoining the pit having changed hands, an access gate was required, and it was arranged to pay half the cost with the Borough Council. Ngittimaru Riding.—An inspection was marie of the Makara bridge site, where all the timber is now assembled and instructions given in detail for its erection. On the Matau-Kiore road the clearing of slips has proceeded to the point of completion. The timber for the Gorge bridge is coming to haul! very slowly, and the erection of the small hridge at W allace'.s is also deferred on account of the same disability. It appears that only £IOO is available for widening points on this road, which may be increased if the matter is urgent. As there is no question on this point 1 am forwarding a fresh application. Repairs to tho low level bridge on the T.'pper Waitara are proceeding as circumstances permit, and will shortly be completed. Five sets of 0-in. pipes have been sent to Purangi to replace wooden culverts on the Junction Road. Urenui Riding—A further supply of broken stone has been carter! out of the Okoke Pit, and quarrying sfill continues to proceed slowly. On'the Upper Piko Roar! the formation contract lias been completed, further work laid off, and plans and specifications are in course of prenaratirm. Being unsuccessful in obtaining a :Vrni;a.i for this district, appli„Mti»ns close to day for,the position. Tie boulder contract is being proceeded with a-, weather and tides permit and stone is available. Mokau Riding.—The contractors are busy stripping for their shell rock eontract, and promise to have a good supply very shelly. The fascining of the Main Road has been completed, and repairs to the burnt papa will now be attended to, followed by repairs to the metalled portion. The work on the Pukearuhe metalling has been retarded by the weather, and no great progress lias been made. . The warning notice board* for the dangerous corner at Uruti have Leon piepared and placed in position. Further specifications have been prepared for acquiring the £514 Ds lid, balance of £1314 9s lid, mentioned in authority of February last. Thirds proposals amounting to £402 las lOd have been prepared, and will be submitted for approval to the Land Board. ■ The report was adopted. OKOKE ROAD. Messrs P. Darke, W. H. Gibson, T. Wright, D. McDonald, and T. H. Lee, settlers on the Upper Okoke, asked the Council to repair the Okoke Road from the Piko Road, as it was absolutely dangerous to traffic in its present state. The engineer pointed out it was difficult to obtain labor, and at present there was no surfaceman in the district.—No action taken. GENERAL. The Public Works Department notified payment to the Council's account of MAS, being credit on account of work done on the Mimi-Mokau Road. Mr. J. H. Hobbs wrote thanking the Council for a grant of £3 towards the repairs of his dray and harness, whkh | waß damaged whilst being used in clearing slips on the Matau-Kiore Road. At the same time he did not consider the amount asked, £5, would cover repairs. The Patea County Council forwarded a copy of resolution condemning the inclusion of men of enemy parentage in reinforcement drafts or in any capacity in the Defence system.—The letter was received. The tender of Clias. Marsh for the supply of IiOO yards of stone at Waipapa was accepted at 3s 3d per yard. Mr. T. Lee's oiler to rent a small portion of road reserve at Okoke at I5 r , per annum was accepted. Cr. R. T. Hicks gave notice to move at next meeting that the rate for the ensuing year be l|d. the same as last year. It was resolved to draw the attention of the Taranaki Law Society to the fact that some solicitors in transferring land neglect to have the names transferred on the valuation roll. The Postal Department forwarded cancelled guarantee bond in connection with the Okoke telephone office, as the live year guarantee had expired. Accounts amounting to £573 13s 7d | were passed far payment.
