PANIC IN BERLIN. USUAL SOPORIFIC ADMINISTERED. London, July 3. The Daily Telegraph says there is a panic in Berlin. Troop trains and all available new artillery have gone west. The Kaiser also goes. Special newspapers have been issued to reassure the people. Berlin,, July 3. A communique states: —The continuation of the British and French attacks did not secure any advantage north of the Somme, and they suffered extraordinary and sanguinary losses. We withdrew to our second position south of the river. During the night the enemy again exhausted himself in a fruitless attack 011 the village of Thiaumont. He captured GOO yards of a trench south-west of the village, but was driven out. We captured a hill battery at "Damloup, south of Vaux Fort, taking prisoner a hundred men and capturing machineguns. We brought down six aeroplanes yesterday. AX AMUSING PROTEST. Berne, July 3. The Crown Prince of Bavaria commands the enemy opposing the British offensive. German newspapers protest against the British using gases deadlier than the German variety. GEIIMAN REPORT. Berlin, July 3. A German communique says: —The enemy repeatedly advanced at many points od General Hindenburg's front, particularly north of Smorgon, where the Russians had sanguinary losses. Generals Linsingen and Bothmer continue successful fighting.
