Discussing the shipping deal the President of the Chamber of Commerce -said that on a very generous computation tlie steamers would be able to lift 85,001) tons of wheat.. If the ships were ready to leave England at once they would reach Australia in the middle ol September. If they sailed to England at the cml of September they would nol return to Australia before the end ol January and would not make much impression on a harvest of two million ions.
In his opinion the Government's best move would have been to increase freights, which would have attracted shipping to Australia. Brisbane, June 20. The acting-Chief Secretary, expressing approval ol the shipping deal, referred lo the difficulty of iinding space for Imperial meat. Vie said there were largt supplies of meat iu New Zealand and an agitation was arising to divert ships from here. Happily Mr. Ryan, being in England, would be able to obviate this. Had the ships been diverted they would have been compelled to close down until tonnage was available.
Sydney, June 29. Private cable advices indicate a decided drop in the freight market. The Associated Chambers of Commerce are convening an early conference to formulate a uniform -product contract throughout the Commonwealth.
PROBLEM SOLVED. Sydney, June 29. Federal politicians are gratified at Mr. Hughes' purchase of ships, and anticipate, with the vessels already available, they will solve the problem of marketing the wheat crop. It is also hoped that before long the mails, the carriage of which now costs the Commonwealth £170,000 yearly, will be conveyed in Government-owned ships. Ministers are confident that, despite the high- price paid, the vessels will return a handsome profit. Shipping circles are inclined to consider the purchase a dubious bargain.
