TRIAL OF RUA. By Megraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. Opening the defence against the charges against Rua, his counsel contended that the story to be told by the Natives would be more believable than the police story. He commented on Una's good reputation until he became irritated by what he considered preferential treatment of pakehas in respect of granting licenses to sell liquor, as the result of which he himself took to drinking tire-water. PUBLIC SERVICE CONFERENCE. Wellington, Yesterday. The annual conference of the Executive Council of the New Zealand Public Service Association opened to-day. Mr Allport, president, said that if certain reforms to be considered could be secured it would tend to produce a contented service. The authorities had always been ready to listen to representations from the association.. Although it had not got all it desired it would be satisfied to receive full and thoughtful consideration of its requests.
