N.P. HIGH SCHOOL.
MONTHLY MEETING OP BOARD. Tlyj High Schools Board met on Monday'night. Present: Messrs D. Hutchen (chairman), H. Trimble, L. C. Slaclden, S. G. Smith, F. W. Atkinson, T. G. Hirst, E. P. Webster, and W. Bewley (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Dr. Fookes and Messrs J. S. Fox and Robertson. In connection with the diverting of the Avenue Road storm water from the Board's property, a letter was received from the Borough Council stating that a committee from the Council would be pleased to meet a commitee from the Board to discuss the matter. The chairman remarked that the water could be carried down the gully by pipes at a cost of £3OO, and he thought that the matter could be settled in this way if the Board paid £IOO towards the cost. Other members thought they should test the Borough Council's right to drain the water through the High School property.
Mr. Trimble, moved that the opinion of the Board's solicitor be taken on their position as regards the Avenue Road storm water.—Seconded by Mr. Smith and carried.
Mr. H. J. Okey, M.P., wrote enclosing a letter received by him from Mr. W. F. Massey, as follows: "I am in receipt of your letter of the 6th inst, with reference to the application of the New iPlymouth High School Board for a grant of £2OOO towards the erection of a girls' high school. I shall be glad to bring before the Minister of Education for consideration your request that provision be made on this year's estimates for payment of the amount named."
An inquiry was received from the principal of the Marlborough High School as to what allowances were made by the Board to masters who had gone on active service.—The secretary reported having replied that no allowances were made. The Education Department wrote stating that it had been decided to make an interim payment on account of free-place capitation for the months January to June amounting to £750. The insurance of the new buildings was left in the hands of the secretary and Mr. Webster to arrange.
PRINCIPALS' -REPORTS.. Mi- \Y. A. Moyes, principal of tlie Boys' K' ". reported that the school ro"I ..',i May 29. Eight new boarders h.i" i ■'.■•rci, while four left lit the end of the term. Mr. F. W. Christian, who was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the departure of Mr. McDonald, entered on .his duties on the'day the school opened. He had to report that a football match against the Te Ante College fifteen had been arranged for next Saturday (Juno. SH). Miss Hodges, principal of the Girls' School, reported that the school reopened for the second term on Monday, May 29. In the senior school one pupil left and two were enrolled, leaving a total of 79. In the preparatory department two pupils left, making a total of 1.7. The eocoanut matting ordered for two of the schoolrooms had been put down and the extra comfort was greatly appreciated. Two boarders left at the beginning of the term, and one was enrolled, leaving a total of 13. Miss Hodges said she had had complaints from ■parents about the distance boarders had to walk to and from the school, and enclosed a letter from a parent on the subject.
MISS HODGES RESIGNS. Miss Hodges, principal of the Girls' School, wrote resigning her position owing to ill-health, the resignation to take effect from August 31. The chairman said that deep regret would be felt by all the members at losing so capable a teacher as Miss Hodges had proved herself. He moved that aletter be sent to Miss Hodges, expressing appreciation of the zeal and ability displayed in her conduct of the school, and expressing the Board's regret at losing her services.
This was seconded by Mr. Trimble and carried. '
It was decided that applications he called for the position of principal of the "Viirls' High School, at the- same salary as 'Miss Hodges, 'applications to close in time to be considered at next meeting.
