THE CUNARD COMPANY. Now that there is every likelihood of the Cunard Line influence being felt in the New Zealand and Australian trade, it is interesting to note that five freight steamers, of 31,087 tons gross register, have just been acquired by the line. The vessels and the new names they will receive are as follow.-—Anglo-Californian, renamed Vinovia; Den or Airlie, renamed Valeria; Den of Ogil, renamed Valodia; and Luceric, renamed Valacia. The vessels are practically new craft, the "Dens" being built as recently as 1913 for the Barrie Steam Ship Company, of Dundee, the Anglo-Californian in 1911, and the Anglo-Bolivian in 1900, to the order of the Nitrate Producers Steam Ship Company, of London, and the Luceric in 1910 for the Bank Line, Ltd., of Glasgow.
The auxiliary scow, Southern Isles, which was picked up near Farewell Sp)t bottom up and towed into Nelson, has been righted at that port, under the supervision of the harbormaster (Captain Collins). The tug Gordon and the coastal steamer Koi assisted to place the derelict on an even' keel. When the scow righted, she floated with her poop all hut awash, and her head deep under, almost as she appeared when upside down. The three masts were broken off short above the deck, and sails, broken spars, and tangled rigging lay about in confusion. The steering wheel had disappeared, and the after bulwark and a portion of the poop had been carried away, baring her stem post completely. All the doors from th? cabin companionways had been wrenched off by the violence of the sea, though the fflass top of a small skylight ckt t;red in a hollow manner on the cabin top when the vessel became upright. The after hatch covers had disappeared. The port and starboard bulwarks were also broi'ei: ::i, giving the scow a very dihipv dated appearance. She was towed on the Boulder Bank, in order that the water in her may drain away.
