BUDGET ITEMS.
PENSIONS PAYMENTS. A steady increase continues to be recorded in the payments under the Pensions Act (said the Minister for Finance on Friday), the gross payments for the past year being as follows:—Old-age. pensions, £479,33!); widows' pensions, £38,357; military (Maori war only) pensions, £48,273; total, £503,969. Tlie number of pensioners on the roll at the close of the year was 23,017, as follows; Old-age, 19,504; widows', 1890; and military, 1323. The old-age and widows' figures represent increases of 452 and 102 respectively, but the military pensions payable to veterans of the Maori war are a diminishing quantity, as tlie total deaths during the year amounted to 124, while the new pensions totalled GO.
During the year a miner's pension was provided for by the Miner's Phthisis Act, under which up to March 31 145 claims had been lodged. In 120 of these cases, including hi by widows of minen. pensions were granted representing an anual charge of £5445. The amount actually paid to the close of the year was £ISOB.
