BAND RECITAL. '< It was a oreditahlo idea of Mr. Me- '5 Leod, conductor of tin 1 Citizens' Band, to organise ii recital in Pnkekura Park on Sunday afternoon, as a tribute to th» memory of the late Lord Kitchener. Both bandsmen and public willingly eo-opur- £ ated. and as a result there wag a very 2 large attendance, which' included a nam- | ber of veterans. Tlie band gave a fine J p: ogramme, and their splendid rendition ;!J 0« tin* various numbers was a theme of general admiration, The progrumnto -■••%! submitted was as follows:—Memorial J music, (a) "Saul" (Handel), (b) "Trauer- -J marsch" (Cliopiii); quick-step, "fienown"' • j (I'arrell); suite, "Oriftnn" (Greenwood) ;i '3 selection, "British Melodies" (Green- K wood); euphonium solo, "The Village $ Blacksmith" (arr. Morclli); soloist Sergt. .]j Coutthardt; hymns, (a) "Now the Laborer'e Task is O'er" (arr. JlcLeod), (b) '•For All tlie Saints" (arr. Mel.codr, memorial march, "Our Fallen Hero" (Round); National Anthem. v 4 . The collection in aid of the Naval De- J pendents' Fluid realised £27 10«. jj Prior to the concluding item Mr. W. i J T. Jennings, M.l\ for Taumarunni, said /.-S that the occasion, the anniversary of the buttle of Waterloo, was a solemn one. ' ,« The French were now our brave allies, | and were to-day fighting with nnexampled valor. There was not one heart -| that was unmoved when the death ot Lord Kitchener was announced. Had iq Lord -Kitchener lived he would have seen ,"i tlie great army of five millions that he i created prove as valiant as any i.i our . J history. His great work was aceoni- jj plislied. The Germans claimed tlmt they $ had won the great naval battle, hut . this was a lie. If they did win, why did they return to the Kiel Canal, or, ' as it was called, their "kennel"? Til conclusion, he said that the collection taken that day was worthy of the oceusion, and be asked the public to suitably recognise the work of Conductor McLeod -J and the Band. jj
