THE HARBOR.

RECEPTION OF OCEAN VESSELS. WORK NEARLY COMPLETED. At yesterday's meeting of the New iPlyniouth Harbor Board statements were made by the chairman and msmbers regarding the state of the harbor, and the certainty of Homo vessels coming here in the very near future, that should do much to reassure those who have been pessimistic on the matter. The chairman introduced the subject by stating that there was an impression a'broad among country people that at the meeting recently held with Captain Chudlev; Marine Superintendent of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co., a lot of additional work was required before the ships could come; in fact, there were very grave doubts as to whether the ships would come here at all. He wanted to disabuse.their minds; There was very little w«rk to be done, and, given fine weather, there was no reason why it should not be completed within a month it: six weeks. Evidently, he said, there was some misunderstanding abroad, and people were inclined to be pessimistic. I

Air. E. Maxwell said that the members of tlie Board were very highly satisfied with the result of the meeting] The impression that extra work was required was an erroneous one. The work that Captain Chudley pointed out was merely part of what the Board had proposed to do, but which had not yet been completed. Captain Cluulley did not suggest any tresh work, and it was satisfactory to know that the limit of his requirements was not beyond what the Board proposed to carry out. Messrs C. E. Bellrinprer and D. J. Hug-lies also emphasised this, the former stating that the Board was unanimous in its satisfaction at the result. Captain Chudley had also expressed the fullest confidence in the work of Captain Waller, whose soundings liftd hemi more t 1 " 1 ' verified. ' j
