Onehunga, June 15.—At 4.15 p.m., Rarawa, for New Plymouth. " NOTES. The master of the Indralenm (says a Press Association telegram) was fined 20s and costs at Lyttelton for carrying a man on coastal trips without placing him on the ship's articles. The excuse was that lie was trying the man to see if he was fit to be engaged as a trimmer or a fireman.
The New Zealand Shipping Company announces in southern exchanges that in connection with their service from Canada they have chartered the following steamers to load at Montreal for New Zealand and Australian ports:— Booral (August), Conarga (September), Araluen (October) and Dongarra (November). The new F. and S. liner Northumberland, now at Sydney, is a much larger vessel than the two previous additions to the company's licet, the Devon and Cumberland, but in every other respect closely resembles them She was only completed this year by Messrs Lovan, Hunter and Wingham Richardson at Neweastle-on-Tyne, and her principal dimensions are 520 feet by 63 feet by 31 feet. She is driven by steam-geared turbines, with twin screws', and her ton-, nage is slightly over 12,000 tons. The steamer Sisiman, a vessel that lias sailed under the flag of every nation during her 31 years afloat, arrived in Sydney recently from Manila. During the past 20 years the Sisiman has roved the seas, always following the market offering the best freight. Recently she was engaged in the cattle trade between China ports, but the tempting oilers for old ships brought about a sale, and again the Sisiman flies the flag of the British mercantile marine. Her recent names include Mfouho Maru (Japanese), Using Slum (China) and Nomina. When a charter was fixed for Australia from the East, the owners found that British officers could not he obtained, though they were offering a high rate of pay, Both Manila and Hongkong were canvassed for men, but they were not to be had, and the result was that a crew of Filipinos had to he shipped at Manila. The men aboard the Sisiman gained their experience on vessels running in the Parilie Slope trade, and all hold certificates of competency. Captain de la Sala, the master, was born in London, his parents being Portuguese. He and Mr. C. Webb, chief engineer, are the only British subjects on the ship. The captain thinks that (he engaging of a full complement of Filipino--, will be the means of inducing many more of (hum to take to the sea. J'lie Sisiman is a steel screw steamer of 1293 tons, and was built in Norway in J 835 by Martens. Olaen and Co. She brought a cargo of 60(10 hales of hemp, part of which is for Melbourne.
