THE SHIRKERS.

COMPULSION URGED BY EGMONT COUNCILLOR. At the meeting of the Egmont County Council yesterday, Cr. W. R. Wright moved that the Council refuse to employ any eligible single men unless they liave enlisted and are waiting to be called up. He said that he brought for ward the resolution because he understood that there was, at present in the Council's employ, a young man who jeered at the idea of going to war. Cr. Campbell considered that it was no use passing such a resolution because compulsion was in force, and the matter was in the hands of the Government. The chairman thought that now conscription was introduced, the Government should be able to look into such cases. What was a single man to do if he was not eligible for the war? It was ridiculous to go so far. Cr. Harvey understood that the man m question was unfit. They oould leave it to the Government to take the men they required. The recruiting officer's card showed that the man had refused to enlist, and Cr. McNeill then seconded the resolution. The resolution was put and declared lost; the voters being as follows: For: Crs. Wrk'ht, McNeill, and Forsyth; against: Crs. Harvey, Tioung, Mcßeynoids, Campbell, and the chairman.
