PATRIOTIC WORK.
MEETING OF NEW PLYMOUTH COMMITTEE. The New Plymouth Patriotic Cbrtfc inittee met last night when there wero present: Messrs. J. E, Wilson (chair' man), J. Paton, L. A. Nolan, C. E. Bellringer, A. Gray, J. R. Hill, A. B. Gibson, w. J Chancy, C. Carter. L. Monteath, C. H. Burgess, 0. N. Firth, H. Goodncre, F. Bellringer, Rev. A. B. Chappell, and Captain ITartnell. The Sub-committee appointed to eonfiller the question nf sub-committees. ] eported: (1): That all existing subcommittee (except those for the adjust, ment' of boundaries, Soldiers Club, and for motor enr nrt union), be dissolved;' (2) That out of the General Committee there be set up Snb-con-.viittces to taka charge of the several .natters coming within the scope of the General Patriotio Committee. The chairmen of the Subcommittees, with a limited number of members of the General Committee, to form an Executive Committee, nidi Executive Committee to meet one« in e-ich month; (3) That the following hub-committees and chairmen thereof be appointed, and report to the executive monthly: Investigation of claims for relief:' Messrs. GENERAL. Rev. F. Kales tendered Ms resign*, (ion, which was accepted. 1 In connection with the motor car raffle, the chairman reported that at the New Plymouth end, between £4OO ' and £SOO had been raised by the sale of tickets. If Stratford did similarly ' there would be a handsome addition "to the Wounded, Soldiers' Fund. A grant of £lO 10s was made to tho Soldiers' Gramaphone Fund being organised for the entertainment of the men at the training camp, > WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC WORK. } The Mayoress wrote forwarding a eopy of the balance-sheet of the Women's Patriotic Committee for the pnst six months, and also of some of the work done at the l|)otl depot. Hold-a115.—279 hold-alls have been presented to men going into camp at a cost of about £l2 monthly! Belgians.—l case and 3 bales of gnrments have been sent to non-invaded parts of Belgium, 'through Lady Har\ey, London; 1 case clothing to the Belgian Consul; 1 case to the Serbians, through the Under-Secretary. Specimens of the hold-nils were on mow, and very useful articles they were ' The Mayor remarked that he was not sure that the work of the Ladies' Patriotic Committee was fully realised. (Hear, hear). If members could drop into the depot, pnrtienlarlv on a Fri. day, they would be able to appreciate tiie work that was being done, Members spoke in grateful terms of the work of the ladies, and a motion acknowledging their senses was carried by acclamation. GENERAL. It wis decided to recommend to thy Provincial Association that n Saturday Street collection be taken up on the 24th inst. in aid of the dependents of the men who were lost in the late naval on. gagement. It was also decided to recommend that the Council take into consideration the. question of appointing paid secretaries of the Patriotic Committees. Mr. A. B. Gibson, secretary of the local branch of the New Plymouth centre of the British Red Cross Society, wrote that his Society had voted tt sum of £25 from their funds, but they found that they were legally unable to do so, having been established exclusively for Red Cross purposes. He hoped the Committee would see its way to extricate the Society from its position.—This ' was agreed to, a vote of £25 being made.
