CENSORSHIP OF PICTURES.
DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. ' Wellington. Yesterday. A deputation of picture theatre managers inet the Hon. ft. \V. Russell. Minister of Internal Affairs, to-day, regardI ing the censorship of films. | Mr. H. Hayward said that v the films I were bought outright, and not hired, at I a cost of about " £IOO,OOO, and there | would be a tremendous loss if any rigid J censorship was exercised. 'Managers I now lost when films did not suit the ! public taste. Last year he withdrew .pictures at a cost of £4OO to, £SOO, and cut out at least £IOOO worth. He suggested that a manufacturers' censorship, as adopted in England, might well be adopted here. In England two warrants were issued, one for universal exhibition and tiie other for people over H years of age. The Minister said there was a division of opinion in England over this. One man could not deal with the whole of the films, and there would have to be a hoard of not less than three persons, lie would guarantee, if lie retained his position, that the men appointed would be average men and fair-minded, who would do a fair thing between the proprietors and the public. There would probably De two classes of films, those for adults only and those which could be shown to children. He thought that the public, to a certain extent, was unnecessarily alarmed owing to the naming posters, and he suggested that the proprietors should censor the posters. He (the Minister) would see that nothing unfair was done in the proposed legislation.
