Mr. G. H. Stubbs, formerly of Waitara, and now of the Waikato, is on a brief visit to New Plymouth. A private cable received in Hawera states that Lieut. \V. S. Glenn, the wellknown All Black footballer, a son of .Mrs. Glenn, of Hawera, has been awarded thp Military Cross..
Mr. W. J. Bladder, who has been on the staff of the local Magistrate's Court for the past twelve months, left yesterday on a short visit to Gisborne prior to going into camp as an N.C.O. Dr. Sydney Smith, District Health ORicur. arrived by the mail train last night, and tins morning will confer with th". Sanitary Committee of the Borougk Covncil re health matters in the borough.
At last night's meeting, the Borough Council re-appointed Messrs. H. Ward and K. L. Humphries as its representatives on the Citizens' Band Committee, and Mr, P. White and the Rev. A. B. Chappeli as its representatives on tine Carnegie Library Committee. Rear-Admiral William Christopher Pakenham, whose flag the battle cruiser, Xew Zealand flew, in the recent naval battle, was formerly commander of the third cruiser squadron. He was born in 1801. From 1804 to 1000 he was naval attache in Japan and China. Admiral Pakenham entered the navy in 1874 as a midshipman, was promoted to "lieutenant in 1883, commander in 1800, and captain in 1903. From 1011 to 1913 he was a Lord Commisisoner of the Admiralty.
Mr. F. W. Christian, M.A.. has joined the staff of the Xew Plymouth High School as Classics Master. Mr. Christian is- an authority pn the archaeology, etymology and botany of South Sea Islands, about which he has published authoritative works. He. has also written upon the Incaa of Peru, being a personal friend of the late Sir Clement Markham, as he also was of Louis Stevenson dviring his residence in Samoa. The local High School is fortunate in securing the services of a gentleman of such intellectual attainments, and the town in having'a citizen of such eminence.
The ranks of Wangamii's old settlers (says the Chronicle), have been further depleted by the death of Mr. John Peake. who passed away on Thursday at the ripe old age of 86 years. The deceased, who was born at Denbigh, Wales, was brought up as a barrister of the Middle Temple, but, disliking the law as a profession, left the Old Land in 1852 with his brother Henry for Australia, and proceeded to the gold diggings at Bendigo, Ballarat, and Forest Creek, where he remained twelve months with varied success. He came to New Zealand in 18«3, and commenced farming operations in the Kai Iwi district. During the troublous times with the .Maoris he held a commission as captain in the Militia, obtaining the New Zealand war medal.
Earl Kitchener died a bachelor, and the heir of the earldom is his brother, Colonel Henry Elliott Checallier Kitchener, who was born four years before bis distinguished brother. Colonel Kit. clienor is a widower and lias no children. Be entered the Army in 1886, and became lieutenant-colonel in 1809. He served in the Burmah campaign, being mentioned in despatches, and was chief transport officer of the Manipur Field Force in 1801. He retired after that campaign, and has since lived at Bourne Park, Canterbury. Word was received on Thursday by Mv. J. B. Stansell, of Sutherland road, Lvall Riy. Wellington, that his son \faii.. The deceased was born at Timaru in 18S0, and after completing his education joined the railway service, and at the time of enlisting he held the position of chief clerk at Timaru. For a period he was statiomnastcr at AshI burton, and also acted as relieving staI tionmaster at Palmerston North. He | saw service in South Africa, leaving Sew Zealand as a quartermaster-ser-geant in the Seventh Contingent. The death is reported of Mr. George 11. Hicks, of the Otago Daily Times, and formerly proprietor of the ifatea Press. He was born in Dunedin, but lived for many years at Taieri, where his father had a farm. He joined the staff of the Witness as a photographer in lftflfl. and six years later was made a general reporter. In 1010 he became proprietor of the Patea at Patea, and conducted* it for two years, when his health gave way, and'be. returned to Dunedin, rejoining the Times, staff. For several I month's before his death he was quite laid aside by sickness. Mrs. Hicks outlives her husband, and there are two sons studying at tho -University, one having made important discoveries in wireless telephony and telegraphy and other scientific work.
The death lias tal<cn place in Nelson of an old resident of the district, in the person of Mrs. Oldham. The deceased ladv was in her 85th year. She was a daughter of Colonel Royds, of the 52nd Regiment, a soldier who had fought through the Peninsula war under Wellington; and at "Wemeth" is now the highly valued medal of the gallant soldier, with no fewer than ten clasps attached, viz., Toulouse, Orthes, Nive, Xivcllo, Pyrenees, Vittoria, Salamanca, Thulajos,' Ciudad Rodrigo and Vuentes D'Oonor. There are eight children of the marriage—Messrs Fred (New Plymouth), John (Taihape), Harold (with
the 10th Hussars "somewhere in France") and Alten ("Ttii") Oldham, Mesdames Stafford (Mapua), Cooto (Nelson), Harris (Richmond Bay, Polorus)-, and Miss Oldham (Nelson).
