PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Parihaka Road Board was held at Rahotu on Thursday. Present: Messrs J. Young (chair), Harvey, Hiekey, O'Brien anil Smith. The chairman welcomed Mr. O'Brien to the Board. STRAYING CATTLE. Mr. Claris, Waiteika Road, wrote to the Board stating that there were more stock than ever straying op the road, and asking the Board to do something to stop the nuisance. The chairman sail iliat if the road grazing was a systematic business then it would have to be stopped. The Board did not wish to ue hard on anyone, but this "farming the road" must he done away with. He was in favor of instructing the Booard's roadmen to impound all stock found straying on the roads.—Decided that the foreman he empowered to instruct the roadmen to impound all stock straying on the Board's roads.

Tauru Road.—The foreman submitted plans, etc., of the proposed works on this road, which he estimated would cost foil. He reported that the Maoris had told him that they could not raise the necessary money to open up the road.—The clerk stated that the rates amounted to about £2 per annum.— Matter to stand over.

Mr. Willoughby reported that there were some big boulders in the Kahui Road which, needed blowing- out. The chairman reported that there was a portion of the Kina Road that needed water tables attending to, as the water was running over the road and destroying it. Mr. Smith mentioned that Mr. Pearson had complained that a culvert on Newall Road needed attention.—The foreman was instructed to report. Deputation.—Mr. Julian waited on the- Board in reference to damagy done to Whitiora Road by carting shingle over it to the Oaonui factory. He said he was prepared to meet tlie Board in any way. He would cart shingle and put it on the road, or he would cart boulders to the roadside to repair any damage lie might do, if the Board would let him finish his contract. He only had about another 100 yards to get and it would take him a fortnight The foreman reported the road to be in a bad state.—Mr. Harvey moved that Mr. Julian be allowed to'finish his contract and the foreman to see that the road is put in order by Mr. Julian afterwards.

Ihaia Road.—Mr. O'Brien said the Ihaia Road was in a scandalous state and needed attention immediately.—The clerk said the road was £]~o in'debt.— The foreman was instructed to patch the road.

Mr. Harvey said the settlers should fro in for a special rate.—Mr, O'Brien said they were quite willing to, as they wanted a road.

Foreman.—Applications were received for the position of road foreman, and after some discussion Mr. J. Lynch, of New Plymouth, was appointed' to the position.

Resolved that Mr. M. Hill be. appointed as under foreman at 12s per day. Various members spoke in highly appreciative terms of the work done bv Mr. M. Hill. |

Native Rates.—The clerk mentioned that Mr. Rogers, county clerk, had lately been to Wellington and had succeeded in getting a number of Maori rates from the Public Trustee. The Public Trustee had refused the Board's demands for a number of years past, and lie laid the returned rate cards on the table, which represented a, few hundred pounds' worth of unpaid rates.

Foreman's Report.—Acting foreman -M. Hill reported:—The following roads have been repaired: Kahui, Kina, Opurapa, Pungarehu, Arawliaia, and Te Namu.'

Ngarika Road— The Egmont Countv crusher has been up and crushed 120 yards of stone, which took two days. Kahui Road requires about 80 yards of stone or maintenance, from 'Main Road to Mr. Baker's as there is no pit on that part of the road.—The foreman was instructed to cart the stone with the Board's team at the first opportunity, the amount not to exceed* 30 yards.

Whitiora Road.—This road is in a very bad state owing to the heavy carting of shingle over it for the Oaonui factory..

Road.—Two men have been g'-tting pit metal ready and breaking boulder stone for maintenance work. ° I would recommend payment of £l2 10s to .1. Lawn far stone carted and ploughing out water tables on Ngariki Road.

Popes sold dur'ing the month were two 3in. to Tami Waiwiwi.

Accounts.—Accounts amounting to £•-30 were passed for payment.—Times.
