DISTRICT NEWS.
URUTI. (From Ouv Own Correspondent). The local ladies held a ball in aid of the patriotic funds on the 18th ult. It's rather lute in" the day to report, but better late than never. The function was well attended and proved a great success.. Good supper, fine floor, hall decorations, splendid music by Misses. Mary and Nellie Kraser, and extras by Miss Maudsley anl Mrs. Lawrence combined to bring about this satisfactory result. Mrs. Campbell recently gave a-social evening in honor of Mr. Bert Oxenham, who is leaving for the front. Mr. and Mrs. Fraser also entevtained at lunch the local and Tongaporutu boys. Turnip crops arc looking well and healthy, whilst the grass for this time of t'he year is splendid. It is not known generally outside that our flats equal in grass-growing qualities that of the Waimate iPlains. The only trouble is that we have not a bigger area. The road over Mt. Messenger is in very good order, being open to through traffic, and the work done during the past two year's by the Government is very much appreciated. The war news is exciting these days, and the Daily ?Cews, which gets here right up to time every day, is eagerly looked for and greatly appreciated.
