Sydney, June 8. Additional entries for the" Metropolitan include Chortle and Colonel Sonlt, and for the Epsom, Chortle. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Gisborne Racing Club's steeplechase meeting takes place on Thursday and Saturday next. Braeburn, Immensity, Paremata, Kooya, Downham and other recent winners are engaged at the gathering.
As anticipated Bisogne made tmertds for his recent defeats by gathering in the Farewell Handicap at Ellerslie on Wednesday from a high class field. Although only two horses, Bmestone and Glonroy, were better backed, the winner paid a very fine dividend, and together with 250sovs. for first money this represents a nice win for Mr. A. Alexander.
Mr. Jas. Bull's fine little jumper New York oroke it for a win in +he Tamakl Steeplechase. It was a well eontetsed race, New York. Gluepot and Captain Wacky being together at the top or the hill in the last round. Gluepot upset there, and New York's pace on the down grade enabled him'to score by a couple of lengths from Captain Macky, who beat Hopye by double that distance.
Another horse from the same district in the shape of Tarero landed the Winter Steeplechase, but only after a very hard race with the unlucky Idealism. They were both hard at it over the last half mile, and Tarero just landed the goods by a bare half length. El Gallo was far and away the best 'chaser seen out at the Great Northern meeting, and it is hard to say what load he will get in the Grand National. Waimai, New York, Tarero, Idealism, Marton, Ngatoa and Captain Jack are all useful in'their way, but not in the El Gallo way! Pursefiller found ihe obstacles at Ellerslie much more formidable than those at Wangarmi, and the first fence in tho Great Nbrth'em Hurdles saw her downfall. She was on hand again in the Campbell Hurdles on Wednesday, and leading a}l the. way, won easily from Marconi and a strung out field. Her fencing was again in-and-out, but her pace had the rest of the field in trouble all the way. Once again her party got a nice price. King Chiara ran his best race lo date when he just beat Bluestone home by a neck in the York Welter. Soldier and King Chiara were always prominent, but inside the distance O'Shea rushed Bluestone to the front, and .the race looked all over. But King Chiara camo again in most determined fashion, and the weight telling on Bluestone, the Tara-raki-trained gelding got home by a neck. Flying, Start ( was putting in a flying finish three-quarters of a length away, and Loloma was fourth. The winner's share was oOOsovs.
Brown Loch (Dceley), who had been showing good form, during the meeting, was a prime favorite for the Fitzroy Welter on Wednesday, but Dan Castor (Salvadan —Castor mare), was first out from a big field and won all the way, backers of the favoritc*having to be content with second money. Tiie principal winning owners at the Auckland winter meeting were: W. J. Ralph £IBOO, A. Raynes £550, B. Goldwater £SOO, S. Neary £SOO, J. Cameron £SOO, T. Wilson £390, A. B. Carley £350, D. Moraghan £3OO, F. .1. Lysnar £3OO, Grant and Hodson £2BO, A, Alexander £2SO, J. Jackson £25(1, W. J. Brown £.250, J. Bull £240, and Hon. J. D. Ormond £2OO.
Pressmen got it in the neek at Otaki the other day, being called up to pay entrance fee at the outside gate, as weil as the usual "bob" for race-cards. It is making things pretty sultry when those who are responsible for booming racing and keeping it in the public eye are asked to pay to go to toil! With the exception of about three papers in the Dominion, the proprietors might save money by cutting out the whole game from their publications, and considering the usual courtesies tendered to the hard-working pressmen by the large clubs it ill becomes a little country concern like the Otaki Maori Racing Club to show its bad manners!
Fir Solo is jumping the small hurdles at Opaki in good style for a novice.
Mr. T. H. Lowry, after scooping up most of the plums of the turf this season, contemplates a jaunt to America sin rtly. Kl (.'alio and Pursefiller have been nominated for events at the Victorian RC. Stee|.lci-]i!isc meeting. It will be in tore-Hi n-; to see viiat veiyht the former get* in '.lie 'ar.A where they usually "■iiniver" Maorilandcrs.
Mr. W. W. Coop'T hart the bad luck to lose Fran Bonnet (San Fran—Sun ■Bonnet), recently. The nag wa« bein« exercised on the road when he became unmanageable, and striking a passing motor gar, sustained a broken leg, Eulletitis set in immediately afterwards.
Undecided has gone wrong again, and will require a lengthy spell.
Huhsman finished fourth in the Farewell Handicap at Ellerslie on Wednesday, after having none too smooth a passage.
