OPUXAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent). 'iVie Loan and Mercantile Co.'s auctioneer (Mr. Morrissey) had a busy day on .Monday. In the morning lie disponed of Mr. A. Shaw's small dairy herd, horses and farming implements. The cows brought as'high as £1(1. In the afternoon the ordinary sale was held, and towards evening the personal property of the late Oeo. Bobbie was auctioned. There was a full attendance of members at the Town Board meeting on Monday, viz., Messrs Dudley (chairman). Trotter, Ross, Million and Sorrensen. Business was dealt with as follows: That the offer of Reid and Cray for erection of steel fircbell tower at £lO IDs was accepted; the World's Picture Co. was granted permission to erect a fireproof operating box over the porfh of the Town Hall; Mrs. Taylor's request for. an .improved road was left with the foreman to have improvements effected. The work carried out by the foreman during the month included regravelling of footpaths, kci'bing footpath in the main street, and tarring and sanding a small portion. Work in the Domain grounds,, such as grubbing old flax and cutting back boxthorn, was done.
Miss Statham, Government inspector of old soldiers' graves, frequently writes to tlie Town Board and local residents with a view to 'fretting local interest awakened in regard to the old military cemetery here. She states that tlie Department will assist if the local people will do something, but at present there are very many call? on the local people tor more important necessities in regard to the war. Still, it is not to the credit of the residents, and particularly those who were connected with the military in the early days—and there are a number of them in this district—that the military cemetery is a neglected plot. The milking season is now at a very low pbb, hut it has been one of the best we have had. Factories did not get down to taking milk every other day until a month later than last season. Painting, renewing and overhauling work is now being done at the factories in these parts. The Nursing Association intend holding a concevt in aid of their funds at ar. early date. Mr. M. J. Brennan ha-s been an inmate of a private hospital in Hawo.rn for nearly three weeks. Last Monday Dr. MaeDiarmid considered it necessary tc amputate one of the toes of the left foot. A speedy recovery is wished by all bis friends. Miss liickey, the newly - appointed mistress of the Opunake School, takes charge on Monday. Miss Smith, M.A., who has been appointed to the High School at IPalmeratop North, received a hearty send-off from parents and scholars, who assembled in the Town Ilall for the occasion. The scholars presented Miss Smith with a handsome writing desk. Mr. Norris, organiser of the National Defence League, was In Opunake on Sunday, and held meetings in connection with League business.
