PEOPLE'S DAY.
AT THE WINTER SHOW. A BIG ATTENDANCE. Yesterday, both in the afternoon and evening the Coronation Hall was/crowded, it being People's Day at the Winter Show, and all were delighted with the improvement made in the Show, particularly in its arrangement, on which it would be hard to improve. The only complaint yesterday was in regard to the ventilation, the heat in the, afternoon, which was sultry for this time of year, being oppressive. At times, so dense was the crowd that it was difficult to move along, especially as the majority of those present were bent on a' close examination of the various exhibits. And there is much to admire. Among other exhibits not mentioned yesterday is .a , model loaned by the Harbor Board of the dredge Paritutu, who.se work during the past few years, has enabled our harboi to accommodate the big Home liners that it is hoped will oe /tinning regularly to New Plymouth before the next' Winter Show comes round.
All stall holders reported good bust ness, the public being in a happy mood. The ladies in charge of the Red Cross Mart particularly did well. Their work attracted considerable attention, and their saleable wares svent oft rapidly. The guessing competitions for the cake, flag, etc., also filled well. Another fund has also been started, Mr. Hutton having given a picture to be disposed of in aid of a fund for the Widows and Children of British Sailors, and this lias also filled very well.
Jn tlie evening the scene was a very pretty one, tlie rotunda in tlie centre of tlie. hull, with its variegated lights, considerably enhancing tlie effect. The Citizens' Band again rendered a" nice programme of music. ,
Tlie judging was completed fairly early in the main haH, the honey section being practically all that hail to be adjudicated upon. This class produced considerable competition, and is rripidly becoming more popular in Taranaki. It is a valuable industry that is only in its infancy in this district, which, with its mild climate and lengthy flower season, should be very suitable for apiaries. Competitors were present from as far south as Greytown. The prizes were well distributed, Mr. P. W. ■Sandford being the . principal winner. Ho secured Mr. 0. J. Henrick's handsome trophy for points. An interesting exhibit is a plot showing small sections of the prize winning crops in the acreage competitions, as they wer,e actually growing. This, however, would be of much greater educational value if cards were placed giving tlata as to yield, etc. In the' Primary Schools court, Mr. H. Trimble (chairman of the Board) is showing some carrots and other roots that illustrate the advantages of deep cultivation. He also shows some seedless barley and tares which was sown on March 11th, and is now fully 2ft flin high, and has been fed to the cattle for some time.
BOY SCOUTS' EXHIBIT. This display includes a 12ft boat which Hie "Wild Duck" Patrol are building. A set of book shelves, a book rest, a footstool, 2 hammocks, 3 brands of knots, splices, and bends, and the trek cart fitted up for ambulance purposes, including a woven straw mattress. There is also displayed the flags-that make up Nelson's famous signal. A number of Boy Scouts arc in attendance and jive the interested spectator all information. « THE RESULTS. TRADE DISPLAYS. WEBSTER BEOS. Webster Bros., auctioneers and seed merchants, are making a special display of Sutton's seeds. included are some very fine specimens of Sutton's Matchless white enrrot and Sutton's Prizewinner yellow globe mangel. North Taranaki crops this year bear out the tests at Moumahaki and other experimental farms regarding these twq fine .field roots. Sutton's Superlative and Up-to-date swedes are also very prominent, and fine specimens are shown. Examples of Sutton's packing methods are shown in this stall. A line collection of Sutton's 20 potatoes cannot be passed over. This variety was grown with great success in this territory last season. Tlicy are also showing "Konka," a building material, manufactured in Wanganui. Being a pumice constituent, it is insulated. It is made 3ft by 2ft Oin, with a thickness of %in,, smooth or rough coat. It is said to be as cheap as timber, and besides there is a considerable saving in upkeep McLEOD AXD SLADR. McLeod and Glade are showing a fine display of lithographic work of every description, also typewriters and accessories, the dictophone, filing cabinets, and all requisites to eauip. the up-to-date otßa^,
COW-LIC. Dairy shows attract dairymen, and it is only natural that veterinary medicines, so indispensable to the farmer, ,are exhibited. Ratjen's Cow-lie, which has lately been marketed throughout Taranaki, is claimed by the producers to be the effective preventative of abortion, reclwater and general unthnftincss in dairy herds. Mr. Hill, the representative, is in charge of the exhibit VIVIFIC. A stall which will interest all visitors (particularly those who are not up to general health requirements) is that occupied by Mrs. Moore's Vivilic rtmcdies. Mrs. Moore's medicines are known throughout New Zealand. Especially benefiting to sufferers of indigestion anil constipation is the Vivitfr tonic. A perusal of the numerous testimonials, or, better still, a talk with the repre- i sentative in charge, will convince. I J. YOUNG AND CO. In yesterday's report of the Storrie Ltd., exhibit at the Show we omitted to state that Messrs. J, Young and Co., the well-known implement manufacturers of Wangamii, hold the sole agency for Storrie's implements, milking machines, etc., in the North Island. ° M. 0. BUTCHER.
This well known wheelwright and coach builder has a striking display |in the first annexe, which shows that he is keeping his establishment right abreast of modern requirements in catering for the needs of the rapidly increasing motor . traffic Motorists would do well to inspect this exhibit, as it shows that Mr. Butcher is able to execute any woodwork required. Ineluded therein is a motor ear which has been completely rebuilt after a bad smash, and is now as good as new. The firm is also exhibiting the frame of a Red Indian motor cycle side-car, which they manufacture. It is of kauri joints glued and screwed, panels being of Russian free-ply They also desigA and manufacture any description of motor body for tradesmen or for motor lorries and 'busses. The horse-drawn vehicle is not neglected, as is shown by a farmers' light gig, a farmer's milk waggon up to one ton, on the latest principle, that was built for Mr. N. W. Hill, and also a farmer's spring dray to carry 30 cwt.
COOK AND LISTER. It is at this season of the year, when the ordinary farm work has slackened off somewhat, that the farmer has time to attend to matters that have had to he neglected iu the summer. Nothing probably suffers more than the harness, and therefore the fine display made b--Cook and Lister in this department i„ the main hall, will be specially interesting. This firm is noted ' from Opnnake to Awakino for its workmanship, and combined with the fact that none but leather from Hirsts', of Wellington, the best leather manufacturers in the Dominion, is used, has served to enhance the reputation gained. Several fine sets of harness are displayed, some suitable for the factory cart and others for the gig. Every requisite necessary to equip either the harness or saddle turn out is also displayed. Another feature of interest is the display of cow rugs, in which this firm specialises. For either 10s or 12s the cow can be kept warm and dry, and in ilicse days of high prices, it surely pays to safeguard her welfare. Cook and Lister pay freight to any part of Taranaki, which should be an added inducement.
THE BUICK CAR. It will be remembered that some few weeks ago, Mr. Vigor Brown, M.P., toured through Taranaki, and was most enthusiastic about the pleasures to be derived from motoring over Taranaki's beautiful roads. His pleasure was contributed to by the fact that the tour was made in a Ifllfl model Buiek car, lecently purchased by Mr. YV. Jackson, of the Masonic Stables, and of which P. H. Robertson and Co.. New Plymouth, and G. H. Taylor (lnglewood), are the agents. During the past few months they have disposed of eight cars 1o satisfied purchasers in lnglewood and New Plymouth districts. This ear is on exhibition in the second annexe at the Winter Show. The car is well known to lovers of the motor oar throughout Taranaki, where it has alriady maintained the high reputation, established wherever previously used; one of the new models having made the trip to Wellington and back inside :i(i hours. An inspection of the car should well repay those who are thinking of purchasing a motor.
