BUTTER AND CHEESE
AT THE WINTER SHOW. RECORD ENTRY OF BUTTER AND CHEESE. One of the features of the show this year is undoubtedly the great display of butter and cheese, which is attractively staged in a central position in the hall, as is befitting, when we consider the important part these staple products have taken, and are still taking, in the development of Taranaki. Ia butter the entries are about on a par with last year, but there is a great increase in the number ofthese exhibits, nearly treble that of last year. Entries have been received from practically all over the North Island, and a gratifying feature, as far as this Society is concerned, is the interest evinced in the show by cheese factory managers in North Taranaki, who hitherto had not supported the show freely. The arrangement of the exhibits this year was very favorably commented on, and neither public nor exhibitors have any cause for complaint on iliis score. 'Pot plants and greenery add to (.lie attractiveness.
The judges were Messrs Johnston (New Plymouth) and Gwillim (Welling ton), for butter; Messrs Woods and Robertson (Patea) for cheese. Interviewed, they said that on the whole the butter exhibits were good, though in some cases the flavor of turnips was noticeable, and this, of course, threw the butter practically out of the running, and as this butter opened up practically in the same condition as it would on the Londqn market, the warning note should be heeded if Xew Zealand, is to hold its prominent place in the world's market it has hitherto.
Regarding the cheese, the judges'complained about the lack of finish in many cases. More attention should be given to this, as points are deducted for unattractive appearance The principal winners this year in the butter section were Awahuri. which won four firsts last year; this time it annexed Nathan and Co.'s fifty guinea cup and two points medals. Shannon, a new competitor, won Lovell and Cliristnias's cup. Kairanga also secured two firsts; Rata and X'e Aroha two firsts, the latter for home separation, a new class. Cape Egmont won the new class for wliey butter, which did not attract much competition. The most successful North Taranaki factory was Tikorangi, with- a second and two thirds. In cheese, Kakaramea secured three I wins, including the Union Company's 'trophy, and Parkvale two wins, including the Siiaw-Saville Cup. and nlso a points prize. Taieri and Peninsula also secured a first. Cardiff, which was so successful last year, only secured a second and a third. Riverdale obtained a second and a third. Detailed prizelist:—'
