LAND FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS.

REPLY TO HON. JAS. ALLEN. Mr. T). ,T. Hughes has forvfarded the following letter to the Hon. Jas. Allen in reply to his letter re lands for soldiers:— To Hon. .T. Allen. Sir, —1 have the honor to acknowledge yours of May 20 in reply to my enquiry re purchasing land in Taranaki for returned soldiers. I wish to thank you for your lucid explanation as to proposed available land in Taranaki, and also for information as to land now available. As one who ha 5 been through pioneer bush work in Taranaki I wish to respectfully point out to you that the Minister of Lands is in my opinion making a lingo, mistake in providing returned soldiers with the class of land mentioned. A man should be in the best physical health to go into the baekblocks, and requires capital at his back, and to wait many years before thinking of family T had no idea such proposals would be offered to our returned boys. When I brought the subject under your notice it. was. as then stated by liie, viz., the placing of Taranaki men on land they were familiar with and could work. There are numerous large holdings of first class dairy lands suitable even Qn the Waimatc plains, and between Hawera' and Wanganui on the coast. T know several men who have aggregated their holdings into thousands of acres which are worth between £4O and £6O per acre since the freehold tenure is in view of West Coast Settlement Lands passed by Aet of Parliament recently. Small holdings of good level land of this class should be offered to suitable Taranaki men, and would, I ■tin sure, be more suited to the majority of them than isolated broken country which is nearly all second and third class land. As our returning heroes will have endured quite enough hardships and privations, may I ask you, Sir, to once again bring the matter and my objections before the Minister for Lands and ask him to endeavor to cater for those willing to avail themselves of good dairying land.

D. J. HUGHES, Member of Becrujtinjg Boanl.
