THE COUNTY ENGINEER.

ACCEPTED FOR ACTIVE SERVICE. Mr. R. W. Fisher (county engineer) yesterday notified that he had been appointed to the Field Artillery branch of tlie 20th Reinforcements, with a commission, and with orders to report at Featherston on 27th inst. In tendering liis resignation he did so with regret, as he hail become acquainted with the district, and was now conversant .with the local conditions; but he felt it incumbent, in view of his sixteen years' military experience, gathered in peace time, to place, his services at the disposal of the Defence Authorities. He also wished to express his keen appreciation to all connected with the Council, for the courtesy extended to him, and he could not refrain from coupling the name of tlie chairman (Mr. J. Brown), who had at any time been so willing to accompany him to any part of the,county to settle matters which had cropped up. Mr. F. Basliam, engineer to tlie Elthi\m County Council, wrote that his services would be placed at the disposal of the Council during the absence of Mr. Fisher. The chairman said he gloried in Mr. Fisher's pluck. He was sorry to lose him. He was taking a man's part. Crs. Morton and Connett also spoke in appreciative terms of Mr. Fisher's work, and, on the motion of Cr. Morton, seconded by the chairman, it was unanimously resolved that this council, while regretting that Mr. R. W. Fisher had to tender his resignation as engineer, heartily appreciated his spirit and hoped he would be spared to return, when the Council would be pleased to reinstate him in his present position. The chairman stated that if the Council was satisfied, he was prepared to onrry on. ns he did previous to the appointment of an engineer, until such time as Mr. Fisher was at liberty to r»turn.
