FOR MAY. (Taken at' Pukekura Park weather station; altitude, IGOf't). Mr. W. W. Smith, observer, reports:— The weather was mild but variable throughout the month. Fresh strong winds 'blew on £0 days. The south-east gale that blew from the 10th to the 13th comprised the dense mass of cannilus clouds on to the north side of Mt. Egmont, which then closely resembled Antarctic ice masses. The so-called "mushroom" or "umbrella" cloud occasionally capping Mt. Egmont occurred on the 13th. A slight tinge of snow fell around the crater of Egmont on the 7th, and a heavier fall on the 31st. Fine displays of cirrus clouds were frequent on days preceding rain. Thunder occurred on tile "23rd, 24th, 28th and 20th, with vivid lightning. Slight earthquakes occurred on the Ist and 20th. Rain was recorded on 21 days, 3 points (100 points to the inch) on the 20th, to 123 points on 31st; total, 691 points. Maximum thermometer, OOdeg, on •25th, 72deg on 14th. Minimum thermometer, 45deg. on 12th, OOdeg. on sth. Maximum wet bulb, 54deg. on 18th, 43deg. on 7th-. minimum wet bulb, 42deg. on 4 days, 57deg. on 27th. Sunshine recorder, 3min. on 26th, 91ir. lomin. on 19th; total, 14Ghr. 15 mln. The 25th 'was sunless. Solar radiator .(sun's heat}, llodcg. on 29th, 145deg. on Ist. Terrestrial radiator (3in. from grass), 40deg. on 17th, 57deg. on 23rd. J The wind blew from the north on 1 day, northeast 3 days, north-west 1 day, west 4 days, south 2 days, southeast 13 days and south-west 4 days. The 14tli, 15th and 25th were calm days.
