GERMAN GLOOM.
FEARS OF THE POWER OF THE BRITISH ARMY. i. Pessimism is widespread in Germany. This is shown by an article in the Koelnische Volkszeitung which, although intended as a rebuke to grumblers, is highly significant of the state of feeling in the country. The article was quoted in a Renter telegram received from Amsterdam. It says:— '•Now it is anxiety lest, as the result of the adoption of compulsory service, the British Army may become especially dangerous to us. Then it is fat, card's and meatless days about which tliey believe thev must become unnecessarily excited. "We lind prophets of pessimism in tavern and taproom, in cigar shops and railway stations, always busy giving the benefit of their wisdom to their fellow men. "Much worse are the grumblers and pessimists, in s the domain of home politics from whom one may hear, "Things cannot go on muck longer, as .we are suffering from a lack or everything—cattle, butter, fat, bread, flour, ana what will the result be? I "In a few months we shall he at the end of our supplies. Even now it is intended to introduce two more meatless lays, and two breadless days also." "These are some of the latest news in ; the domain of pessimism. Other circles again cannot tell you'enough about the differences of opinion supposed to exist between the Kaiser and Marshal , ;on Hindenburg. * "They whisper that the Kaiser went ;o prepare for a decision in the West, Von Wiudenburg for one in the East."
