SPORTING

ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. Auckland, May 30. The weather is fine, but the'tracks are very heavy for training operations at Ellerslie. Much work was done on the middle grass before breakfast. Loloma, with the assistance of Vinika in the last 4 furlongs, ran 6 furlongs in 1.21 3-5; Castalia did the same in in 1.22. Soultikoff easily beat Tragedy King over a round in' 1.561-5. After breakfast, Royal Chef sprinted 4 furlongs in 511-5, and Tatterley, heavily rugged, ran 5 furlongs in 1.7 2-5. Marimba was better than Multiplication over 4 furlongs in 1.52 3-5. Aurore and Fisher together ran 6 furlongs in 1.25 1-5, and Bisogne and Hushman were on terms at the end of 4 furlongs in 52sec. Multiply beat Signo in a round in 1.5T2-5. Hyginas, Kitty Bellairs, and Te Papapa were in that order at the end of 5 furlongs in 1.6. El Gallo and Glissando did a round, the last 6 furlongs in 1.23 2-5, Ladoguer easily beat Gold Lace over 7 furlongs in L2l 2-5. Purseflller and Gladful were together witli Harbor Light a dozen lengths away at the end of . a gallop over seven hurdles. Sam Pah and Idealism were schooled over the big country. The latter fell at the second fence, a double, but was afterwards remounted and jumped safely. Waimai, Captain Jack and Flingot jumped the big fences. The latter was a bit slow. Westerly and Te Onga were put at the big fences, but the latter tried to stop at the old water jump and went through the obstacle into the ditch on the other side. Neither horse nor rider was hurt. A lot of others were also exercised. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Dimedin races to-morrow. The Otaki meeting opens on Saturday. Lady Louisa is being boomed for the Raukawa Cup.

Marton, on Saturday's form, can be booked to win a big steeplechase soon. Favorites had a crook spin at Wanganui, Square Deal being the only one to connect. . ' Zola is apparently useless in the mud, but on a hard track he is some good. Depredation covered a heap of grsund each day at Wanganui, and was flying at the end of his races. Considering his position in the market Rewi Poto ran a great race on the first day at Wanganui. He looks very fit at present. The Purseflller crowd bought Jerry O'Connell out of his riding engagements at Wanganui, and railed horse and horseman straight away to Auckland. Their only worry is, "What will be second in the G.N. Hurdles 1" The Inglewood "heads," with Wattie the punter in command, made strenuous attacks on the old mill at Wanganui last week, but, after much waste of "ammunition" they retired badly stoushed! A Stratford sport owned up to having seven horses in the Century Hurdles coupled with the Steeplechase winner, Braeburn. His "second legs" filled the first five places, and he stood to win most over Master Regel*. Next! One hurdle winner at Wanganui must have scored out of his turn, judging by the look that passed between owner and jockey when the horse returned to scale. AH National hopes were thereby dimmed, as the handicappers may be depended upon to get in their deadly work right away now. What bad judges some owners are! "Billy" Duncan reckoned Mia C'ara and Austin could not "miss" on Thursday, and he did not have a match on Cello—- , his only winner. A lot of people were waiting to get on Emperador in the Empire Handicap on Saturday, but the crack sprinter went lame on the previous day and had to be withdrawn. Three well performed 'chasers will meet in the Taihoa Steeplechase at Otaki—Nita, Immensity, and Paremata. If they run up to Waiiganui form they may finish something like that—barring accidents, of course. Last year Fortify was slipped into the Farewell Handicap at Wanganui—his only start at the meeting—and won easily, and Lightning repeated the feat on Saturday. Those in the know got their load on, and thus squared up on a bad meeting. If Vladian could have improved on third place in the May Hurdles he would have paid a fine price. His owners backed him heavily each day, but the prad was not quite smart enough,

J. George with Cr«wn Pearl an< Glenroy, and P. Johnsen with Captaii Miro and King Chiara, left by the Ra rawa last night to fulfil engagements a the Auckland meeting.

The Rata Hurdles at Wanganui was reckoned a match between Golden March and Austin, but a long-odds chance in the infirm Bransfield made no race of it. The winner is some class in soft going, but he may not stand up to a searching preparation. Greenstreet's form was hard to follow at Wanganui. though they say the stable did not benefit by her win on Saturday. She has pace, biit not enough heart to give a hungry dog two square meals. Favorite doubles went out with a series of loud bangs at Wanganui, but the Isaacs have not lengthened their prices for Auckland heats. One generous Bar Von offers to lay 20's about at least two brackets at Ellerslie. He will surely die of enlargement of the heart! Styrax ran two honest races at Wanganui, and was beaten squarely. It was a hopeless task chasing the flying Crown Pearl on the second day, but if Master Regel had not come down on his nose at the fence five furlongs from home he might have troubled the winner. On Darby Paul's form at the meeting he appears to be a hopeless proposition. Bcreola and Bivouac are others that might be sent to the zoo. Most people are wondering liow Captain Miro came to beat Crown Pearl and Patronymic at Hawera. Of women and racehorses there are some things that will never be explained. Taihape, the big boom from Auckland, is not above hunters' class. Heaps of alleged wise-acres fell to him on Thursday. Henry Clay was not up against a flash field in the Balgownie Hack Handicap on Saturday, but he won in good' style, and everybody, was pleased to see Mr. Geo. Gibson have a win. The chestnut may be better at four years.
