ITALY.
THE RETIREMENT. AUSTRIAN OFFENSIVE CONTINUES. ITALIAN POSITION SATISFACTORY. Received May 29, 9.50 p.m. Rome, May 29. The Austrians had a substantial success in the centre, inasmuch as the talians abandoned their main line at Arsiro-Asiago plateau. The Austrians are nearly at Posina, and are enclosing upon Arsiro, where they claim to have captured armored works on the northern outskirts of Italy's situation. The situation of our wings, however, is very satisfactory. The Austrians suffered terribly in the attacks on the Italian left, especially at Zugnatorta and Conizugna. The Austrians are utilising fifteen divisions on an offensive front of fifty miles between Lake Garda and Brenta. The nature of the country does not permit of a continuous line of trenches similar to those at Verdun. The chief handicap of the Austrians is the lack of railways and good roads. Arsiro is deserted, but is intact. The population in the Vicenza district are calm and confident. Italian soldiers are massing everywhere. DAYLIGHT SAVING ADOPTED. Rome, May 28. Italy has adopted daylight saving, which will come into operation on June 8.
