STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Monday. The friends of Dr. Steven will be pleased to hear that lie is improving, and hopes to be about again in a short while. Dr. Roydhouse is looking after Or. Steven's practice during his illness. The arbitrators in connection with the Borough Council's purchase of the Electrical Supply Company's undertaking arrive by the mail train this evening. Last night there'was a thorough downpour, and most of the culverts were unable to carry off the storm water. It is feared that damage has been done in the Mangaehu district by the heavy rain. A young fellow in uniform who 'has been parading the streets of Stratford for some months past, got a rude shock a few days ago. Several townspeople were enquiring why this young fellow was allowed so much furlough, because they knew lie had never been to the front, and Lieut. Gray quietly asked him to show him his papers, with the result that lie was given naif an hour to get into civilian clothes. The 17th Reinforcements quota left iby the maii train this morning, 16 men forming the Stratford party. His Worship the Mayor addressed the men before leaving and the Mavoress presented each man with a hold-all and housewife. Cheers were given for the men as the train drew away from the platform.
