(Special to Daily News.) (By "Moturoa.) Wanganui, Saturday. The Wanganui Winter meeting concluded in dull weather. Rain set in early in the afternoon, making the course heavy. Tho attendance was again large, but winners were very hard to pick, only one favorite winning during the day. The first day's form was no guide to-day, several horses which ran poorly on Thursday romping in easy winners. Taranaki horses had a good innings, Crown Pearl and Henry Clay winning, and Styrax, Nita, and Maid o' Gowrie paid second dividends. Mia Cara was backed for the Winter Oats Handicapi as if was all over. After running second to Coropet she assumed command at the turn, but failed to stall off Greenstreet, who finished fast and just won by a narrow margin. Depredation was a fair third, but Glenroy ran badly. Pomeroy tried to win the Balgownie Handicap from end to end, but Henry Clay headed him before turning for home and kept going long enough to scramble in a winner from Glittering Sand? and Spain, who finished fast. Naupata was scratched for the Grandstand Steeplechase, and Captain Macky and Daylight Bill monopolised the betting. This race saw Taranaki's luck clean out. Marton and Captain Macky were always prominent, but at the home turn Nita passed them and led over the last obstacle. MeFlynn here lost liis stirrup, and in an exciting finish Captain Macky just beat the Hnwera nure by a head. Marton, who fenced only fairly well was a handy third, and then came Master Strowan, Otupai, and Captain Dick. Daylight Bill broke down and was pulled up. Master Regel was the public choice in '/•e May Hurdles, but Crown Pearl, who had the services of Traill, had many hackers. Queen's Post made the early running, but Crown Pearl had everything beaten five furlongs from home, and won very easily from Styrax and Vladian. Master Regel fenced badly. Golden March and Austin were evenly backed in the Rata Hurdles. Ormesby made the early running, but Bransfield and Austin singled themselves out going along the back'; Bransfield then cleared out, winning in hollow fashion. Square Deal was first choice in the Empire Handicap. George made all the running, but the favorite wore him do>vn in the straight and won easily. '"'The last race was run in heavy rain and in darkness, the colors being hard to distinguish. Maid o' Gowrie and Lightning disputed every inch of the journey, but the Aucklander drew away at the "distance. Haupai came very fast in the straight and appeared to head Maid o' Gowrie on the post for second plnce.
