NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to Daily News.) Wanganui, Last Night. The Wanganui Winter meeting opened in wretched weather. Rain fell during the day and the course was very heavy. Favorites had a bad run and visiting horses got away with the chief events. The attendance was large and speculation brisk.

The proceedings opened with the Borough Handicap, Mia Cara, Greenstreet, and Depredation being evenly backed. Tyson and Interlude led to the turn, where the lattei forged ahead, but ooifld not stall off a late run by Depredation, who won very easily. The_ public was wide of the mark in selecting Taihape, Nita, and Silver Monarch for the Haek Steeples. Immensity ran into the lead at the end of six furlongs and won pulling up from Paraniata, who finished fast. A fine field of a dozen went to the post for the Wanganui Steeplechase, and it was a fine race to watch. Naupata, Hurakia, and Braeburn had most friends and the last-named won in good style, though Daylight Bill and Naupata would have been troublesome had they stood up. New York and Braeburn were prominent all the way. Daylight Bill was brought down through being crossed at the first fence of the stand double a, mile from home, and in avoiding the fallen horse both Naupata and Hurakia got into the wing of the second fence. Braeburn' then singled himself out and obtaining a big break along the back, won easily from Captain Macky and New York. Then followed Master Strowan, Otupai, Jackman, and Glerimore. Bercola finished last.

Heavy rain fell during the running of the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles, rendering jumping very risky. Austin and Patronymic carried the bulk of the money. Pursefiller lost fifty yards at the start, but at the end of a mile had disposed of her field, winning in a canter from Lord Nelson and Patronymic. 4-H started in the Century Hurdles, Art and Tararu Jack being solidly supported. Master Regel indulged Waipunoa with the lead for six furlongs, and then assumed command. The Aucklander increased his lead irt the last round, and easily kept clear of Tararu Jack ami Styrax. Vladian was fourth, and then came Waipunoa, Marton, and Queen's Post.

There were no scratchings in the Connoly Handicap, and ihrough several thousand pounds being shut out several horses started at false prices. Lady Louisa was prime fancy and she flattered her supporters, until Mullingar caught her on the post. Zola led for a mile, but was well beaten at the' home turn. '

A big field of eighteen lined up for the Purua Hack Handicap, Pomeroy being pronounced favorite. Fionnulla led Maid o' Gowrie for six furlongs and the Hawera mare looked a winner as they turned for home, but Cello came fast inside the distance and won very easily.
