The weather during the week has been l.'.ild and spring-like at Wanganui, and training operations have been conducted under favorable conditions. The tracks are perfect, and a large number of unrses are exerciser l each morning. Most of the visitors have arrived, but the crowd is not as large as usual. Poss'.My many will arrive to-day. Acceptances received for Thursday's races are surprisingly good, particularly in the jumping events. The Wanganui Steeplechase was considered unlikely to attract more than seven or eight runners," but thirteen have been paid up for. A dozen remain in the Century Hurdles, and ten in the Connolly Handicap. The minor events leave no cause for complaint, thirteen holding their ground in the Borough Handicap, nine,in the Hack Steeples, thirteen in the Kaitoke Hurdles, and no less than twenty-four in the Puma Hack Race. Everything points to a successful meeting, which spells more dividends for W. Massey, Esq., and the Patriotic Fund. The thirteen paid up for in the Wanganui Steeplechase include practically every horse of note entered for the race with the exception of El Gallo (who was scratched last week), Tarero, and the CM mond horses, Vascular and Idealism. Last year's winner, Daylight Bill, is on the spot, and looks really well. Jackman and Glenmore, like Daylight Bill have all won tjie race, and possibly the first-named will be the hardest of the "eld hands" to stoush. Naupata has won over country, and Feilding form shows that the Porirua candidate is well forward. Hurakia is reported to be quite at home over the big fences, and of the seven ! weighted at lOst and under there are promising sorts like Master Strowan, Braeburn, Captain Macky, and Nita. It should be a great race. The scratching pen was used with piore I deadly eifect in the Century Hurdles. El Gallo and Harbor Light v. ere early withdrawals, but Monday right saw Awahou, Hurakia, Vascular and four lesser lights drop out. Of those remaining in Tararu Jack, Art, Master Regal, and Queen's Post, have been showing up prominently of late, and Sir Donald, Styrax (who scored last year), Marton and Aruake are all said to be well. Although paid up for it is not at all certain that the much-boomed Vladian will be a runner on the first day. Taranaki is strongly represented in the Borough Handicap, but Greenstrcet and Coleraine. appear to be more kindly treated than any of our horses, If the going is at all moist Coropet might show up. Good reports come to hand (.1 Mia Cara's track form. Last year's v'inner generally runs well on the Wanc/nui course. Several of those engaged in the Hack Steeples have to be taken on trust, though the fences are not very formidiible at Wanganui. If Flingot gets over tl.om at all well his pace should settle ■ 1 e question, and Silver Monarch, Nita, i,iid Taihape can all go some. The Kaitoke Hurdles will he of interest to Taranaki-ites chieflly because of the presence of Crown Pearl. Evcry1m dy appears to be waiting for the old 1 c.rse, and he looks like taking a lot if beating. • The Connolly Handicap field is smaller than anticipated, but well backed ones like Zola, Emperador and Lady Louisa hold their ground. This trio, together with Leonta, should provide a pretty nice. Something like a puzzle presents itself in the Prua Hack Handicap. Zola is engaged ■ here also, and Paraoa and Antwerp will do battle for Taranaki. ':. he race looks open.
