"PESTS TO SOCIETY."
TWO MEN SENT TO GAOL. QUESTION OrPROVIDING COUNSEL By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night, At the Supreme Court to-day. Corr.elina Trainer and William Murray were sentenced to 18 months' hard labor, to be followed by detention for not ex*' eeeding two years' reformative treatment for robbery, accompanied by violence, from a man under the influence of drink. The jury expressed appreciation of the action of Constable Johnston, who, single-handed, arrested the two prisoners shortly after the crime. The jury also commented on the fact that the' prisoners were not defended by counsel. Mr. Justice Edwards said a Judge would always assign counsel where there was a possibility of a just verdict of not guilty not being returned. Both prisoners had bad records and in those circumstances he did not feel justified in spending public funds on their de* fence. They were pests to society.
