THE EMPIRE'S IDEALS.
•"GERMANY'S CHALLENGE. ACCEPTED BY BRITISH EMPIRE. RUDYARD KIPLING'S MESSAGE. By Cable—Prts« Assooi.i'.ion—Copyright. Received May 23, 0.23 p.m. London, May 28. Rudynrd Kipling's message on the oe. casion of Empire Day in as follows: I When Germany challenged us to hold up with our lives the ideals by which ' we professed to live, we accepted the challenge, not out of madnes, nor for glory or gain, hut to make good those professions. Since then the Allies and cur Empire have fought that they may be free and all the earth may lie free from the intolerable domination of Herman ideals. We did not foresee the size of tse task when the war opened, We do not flinch from it now. Lour months have schooled us to a full knowledge and tempered üb, nationally and individually, to meet it. The nations within the Empire have created, maintained and reinforced from their best great armies which they devote without question to this issue. They emerged one by one as powers clothed with power through discipline and sacrifice, strong for good by the bitter know-. ledge of evil they arc- meeting, and wise in nnpurchasable wisdom of actual achievement, knowing as nations what it is we fight for. We go forward now under' the proud banner of our griefs and losses to greater effort and endurance, and, if need be, to heavier sacrifice. We are equal sponsors for the de« liverance of mankind.
