EL-ARISH BOMBARDED. COMBINED OPERATIONS. EFFECTIVE AIR WORK. Wellington, May 30. The High Commissioner reports from London, under date May 19, 12.25 p.m.: The General Officer commanding in Egypt reports that our ships, aeroplanes and seaplanes bombarded El-Arish, an important post on the enemy line of communications between Syria and Egypt, on Thursday morning. The ships' bombardment is reported to have reduced to ruins a fort south-west of the town. Aeroplanes bombed a column of troops, a thousand strong, on the inarch. Three bombs exploded amongst them. The camps were also effectively bombarded. The ships and machines returned safely. (El-Arish is about 100 miles east of Port Said).
OFFICIAL REPORT. London, May 19. Official: Warships, aeroplanes, and seaplanes bombarded El Arish, an important post on the enemy's Syrian line of communications on the morning of the 18th. The ships shelled the fort, and it is believed reduced it to ruins. The seaplanes opened an aerial bombardment and the aeroplanes following engaged hostile aircraft. Special attention was given to the enemy camps. Three bombs exploded among a column of troops a thousand strong. All the camps were effectively bombarded. All the ships and machines returned safely. The weather during the past week has been abnormally hot. The health of the troops is good. General Sir Bryan Mahon commands on the western frontier of Egypt and General Francis Milne commands at Salonika. MOUNTED ANZAC TROOIPS. Melbourne, August 20. The mounted division mentioned in the cables is commanded by MajorGeneral Chauvel and is designated the Anzac Mounted Division. It is composed of the Australian Light Horse and the New Zealand Mounted Rifles.
