June 23, 24.—Napier Park E.C., Winter. •?URF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Wanganui races on Thursday. Ineuru was unlucky at Blenheim. , Prosser's team had a royal time on Wednesday. Nothing but Martial Air was asked for on Thursday. Marton was tried over big fences on Thursday morning, but the big fellow got badly tangled up at the double. Walter Eayner lias a good trio of hurdlers for the winter meetings. Vladian, Aruake, and Marton (a recent addition), should win some good races. Nothing but Zola is being enquired for in the Connolly Handicap, but the black horse is also engaged in the Parua Hack Race, and his owner is not at all certain in which race his much-boomed neddy will be given a run.
The writer had a look through Jimmy Peachey's stable on Thursday, and the five horses under the popular Wanganui trainer's care all look splendidly cared for. The chief idol of the stable is, of. course, St. Gate, whose consistency has been remarkable during the past few seasons. Glen Nevis has only recently been taken up, and will not race for a. few months. Regain has freshened up since joining the string, but his forelegs are giving Peachey much trouble. The remaining pair are well-grown maidens by Gravitation and Signor respectively. Both should come good in time'. Do you notice how these martial names are figuring in the winning lists of late. .'Ansae, Martial Air, Gunrest, All War, Firing Line. Case Shot, The Gunner, Battle Eve, Lord Nelson, Eligible, Gunflash, Periscope, Namur, Reconnoitre, Royal Arms, Royal Dragoon, Soldier, Cease Fire, and heaps of others of such like nomenclature have been right in the limelight lately. Tararua Jack, Fionnulla, and Mullingar arrived in Wanganui on Thursday. It is funny to see the pony that accompanies Tararua Jack in his travels. Without his diminutive companion Jack absolutely refuses to enter a horse box. The pony goes in, and Jack follows as meekly as a lamb. Jockey Frank Flynn is schooling Nita at Wanganui, and her displays over the big timber have been first class. It is a pity she hasn't more pace, but properly placed she should do well with the moderate 'chasers likely to be seen out this winter. The Connolly Handicap is run over a mile and a quarter, not over a mile and a. half, as stated' in various papers and double charts. That quarter less should improve the prospects of such a, horse as Emperador, who is let in with 8 3 a stone lest than last year. In the interim his form has been excellent, and his gallops at Wanganui show that he is. in as great a nick as ever. The socalled Zola Handicap may not be the stone certainty that the betting would suggest! »uuiu . They say that Daylight Bill is jumping very slovenly this year, and if such is the case Tarero should make him wL very ' T ll , Ivl T they meet in the Wanganui Steeplechase. Waimai is fencing as well as anything at Ellenhe, and is being nibbled at by ■=^z; d n. ,ong - shotpunt - f »^ wo?"*Swr^T, e "• mare CwKta, has vi on £8435 in stakes this season.
