STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Friday. The many friends and patients of Dr. Steven will be sorry to hear that lie is indisposed and unable to attend to his practice, Surgeon-Captain Johnston, of Wellington, who happened to arrive in Stratford on his holidays, is kindly looking after Dr. Steven's practice for a -few days.
It is marvellous how easy the British public are taken down. Last week a gentlemen arrived in Stratford, and the old tale of the bank draft not coming to hand was pleaded, and "lend us a tenner till the morning," worked like wonders. To-day several business men are bemoaning the loss of sundry fivers and tenners, for tiie bird has flown. It is said that several New Plymouth business men have also cause to remember the man's visit. At the Police Court this afternoon, an Opunake farmer, was fined £2 and costs for a breach of prohibition order. Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M., before commencing the Court business this afternoon referred to the fact that during his recent .visit to Wellington he had the pleasure of meeting Mr. R. Spence, and was pleased to say that he was wearing two stripes, with a chance of soon receiving a third.
