OHAKUNE FATALITY.
THE INQUEST OPENED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Tailiape, Yesterday. Tlie inquest on the men killed in the Ohakune explosion was opened yesterday. • .Tames Egerton, shift boss, said there was 14cwt. of explosives in the charge that exploded. He could form no opinion as to the cause of the explosion. The stacking of the explosives was completed before the concreting-up work was comm,cneed. The explosives used were cam-brite-s, gelignite, and dynamite. The two latter had to be warmed before the charge was put in. The man Torrens had not been found, despite continuous search. William Henderson said he was working in the nuarry when he heard the explosion. l?e ran away, and the body of Davis landed beside him. No trace of Torrens nad been found. Elias Partridge, carpenter, gave evidence that he was erecting a casing to receive earth and concrete to enclose the charge. When lie left at 5.5 p.m. the only man in the tunnel was Torrens, who was packing the concrete in. Dr. Feltfham gave evidence that the bodies of Melsopp, Davis, and McGarry were mutilated after death, as death must have been instantaneous from the concussion.
The inquest was adjourned for a fort' night.
