SPORTING.

TURF TOPICS. (By "Moluroa.") A good number of. outside horses have already put in an abearance at Wanganui, in view of the winter meeting, which takes place on Thursday and Saturday, and the fields in the various events promise to be good all round. On Tuesday morning the Wanganui tracks bore a busy appearance. Emperador and Greenstreet ran six furlongs in 1.18, the former havng slightly the better of the gallop. Master Lupin, Wild Lupin, Interlude, Starengo, Vladian, Aruake, Marton, Nita, Zola, Master Regal and several others did serviceable work.

St. Gate and the Aueklander Regain were sent over the schooling hurdles, but the latter took off too late at the second fence, and crashing through, stumbled and fell. By eome means' E Copestake got under the horse's feet, and was so badly cut about the head that he had to be removed to the hospital. Harbor Light was scratched for the Century Hurdles at 2.15 p.m. on Tuesday It is reported that the Hon. J.D. Ormond will not have a representative at wanganui next week.

When Three won the Denham Stakes at Randwick recently Iho tip was standing out a mile. ( The horse started'at 3 s, and carried No. 3 saddlecloth. _ That a "walk-over" isn't all plain sailing a New South Wales owner found out the other day when his horse Waddy went out unopposed at Gladstone, and after completing the course failed to draw the weight. A 121b lead bag was found on the back of the course, but to get the stake it should have been on the back of the horse, of course! Toa Tere started at a long price in the City TattersalPs Cup (one mile and three furlongs), run on the 6th inst, and in a good field of fifteen did well to finish third. The winner turned up in the rank outsider, Karanaud King who was put in at 6.7. Fantarie 7.12, was second, and Toa Tere 8.12, third. The "also starteds" included Taunter, Firm, Secret Service, and The Christian Brother.

At the same meeting Merrimax won the two miles hurdle race with 11.2 up, in 3.47,. and the ex-New Zealander's backers were rewarded with a limit dividend.

"Musketoon" in the Fvdney Bulletin spina an amusing tale: For years I had been getting tons of excitement cheap—trying to back every winner at every race meeting I'visit. The recipe is simple. If the dav is a bad one my loss is never more than 55,. so there is no danger of ,my being put in the bullring for hooking the bosu' cash to square up with. On the first mop I dump 5s on the most like-looking sort. If it loses—no more betting for me that day! When it gets home first f plank the' winnings on the next race, and keep on doing it. On Doncaster-day at Randwick I backed five winners and ended up square. I had 5s on The Spire in the Hurdles, four to one, and, pocketing 3b, put the £1 .on Reputation in the Autumn Stakes, and scored £ji 10s. Backing two-year-olds is not a strong-point with me," but, all the same, bang went the £5 10s on Thana, which once more landed the bacon. MacShortodd.' thought I had been drinking when £59 10s went on Enrobin at S3 to one, but he laughed on the other side of his oar when,l called round to collect £2023. It seemed risky putting two thousand odd on Kandos to beat Cetigne and Patrobas, but I chanced it, and at siy to one collected £l4,]fil. Then it took a lot of persuading to coax myself to jam the whole lot on the last race, but as. a faint heart never broke a fat bookmaker, I fired the whole £14,161 on Sydian in the Highweight. The Wretched, animal finished last, but Ikey had a narrow squeak all the same of being asked for d 384,996.
