TURKEY.
THREATENED WITH FAMINE. CONDITIONS IN CONSTANTINOPLE. Times and Sydney Sun Services. London, Hay 17. The Balkan correspondent of the Times says that Constantinople is threatened with famine. The majority of Christians are reduced to extreme misery, and traders are compelled to close and forced to give up all their money. Appeals are useless, as Mahomodans' testimony is accepted before that of Christians. Terrorism is rampant. Almost all foodstuffs are ticketed. The Russian advance in Asia Minor is driving refugees to Constantinople, where provision stocks are diminishing and deaths from starvation occur daily. Business has been forced to a standstill and prices 'have increased to twenty times the normal amount. The regularly salaried Germans live extravagantly, incurring the hatred of the unpaid Turkish officials.
AGED TURKS TO BE RECRUITED. Geneva, May 17. All Turks up to 62 years of age have been called np for service.
