ON TO BAGDAD. fURKISH BACKBONE BROKEN, GRAND PUKE'S CAPTURES. ■*. Received May 19, 1.10 a.m. New York, May 18. A message from iPetrograd says that Grand Duke Nicholas captured 37,000 Turkish prisoners and vast supplies of munitions, and this may mean that Mo*ul has already fallen. The Russians are now bringing fresh powerful pressure to I>ear on the rear of the Turkish »rmies. A serious obstacle is believed to exist in the ancient fortified city of Jezireh-ibn-Omar (8a miles west of Mosul), but it is not thought that the fortifications will long delay the Czar's troops, who have already' broken the backbone of the Turkish communications between Diarbekr and MosuL
An Athens message states that Enver Pasha has again appealed to the Kaiser for more men and' munitions to block •the Russian advance to Bagdad. ' According to a Constantinople despatch, Enver Pashj is reported to have sent a. warning that German hopes of a commercial conquest in Mesopotamia «To for ever crushed if the Allies take Eagdad.
