HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce lias received the following cablegram, dated London, May 13, 1916, from the High Commissioner for Zealand. (Note: Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spoth—
Meat.—The demand is greater than the supply for all descriptions. Supplies of home-killed are about the average, but prices are higher owing to short supply of chilled and on account of the decrease in the amount of New Zealand meat available for the general public. Canterbury and North Island mutton S'/od per lb; ewes 7%d. New Zealand lamb of all descriptions !ld. Chilled beef is in very limited supply; hinds, Il%d; fores, B%(f. Butter.—The market is firm owing to reduced supplies. Danish, steady at the advance, 170s to 174s per cwt. Prices for New Zealand are firm, but spot market is bare. Quotations are 164s to 1665; unsalted 165 ato 106s. Australian, market practically cleared, 150s to 160s. Siberian, in fair demand, 128s to 1365. Irish creamery, in good demand and deliveries increasing, 160s to 1645; unsalted, 162s to 1665. Argentine, firm, 1545; unsalted, 156s to 160s. Cheese.—The cheese market is very firm, but quiet. Canadian, 114s to 116s; New Zealand, market closed strong, but spot market is bare, 113s to 114s; English cheddar, in fair demand, 118s to 1225; United States, offerings very small, 106s to 110s, according to quality and size.
Hemp.—The market is quiet but firm, and prices are nominal. New Zealand, good-fair, on spot, £SO per ton; fair, £4B; Manila, fair, £SO. For May-July delivery, New Zealand good-fair is quoted at £49, fair £47; Manila, fair.. £55, coarse £52. The output from Manila for the week was 17,000 bales. Wheat. —The market is steady; there is not much demand, but prices are firm, although only nominal. Canadian, arrived, s!)s per quarter; April-May delivery, 575; Australian, afloat, C2s; Argentine, afloat, 60s. Oats—The market is slightly weaker with less demand. Argentine, arrived, 38s per quarter. Hops.—The market is quiet; buyers and sellers are awaiting further developments. English, 130s to 140s per cwt.; Californian, 100s to 120s. Wool. —The market is firm, with a hardening tendency. Merino and all grades of fine crossbreds have advanced. Medium and coarse crossbreds are tec at last quotations-
