BOROUGH COUNCIL.

STOCK ROUTE QUESTION. The Works Committee of the Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (chairman), arid Crs. L M. Montenth, J. S. S. Medley, J. Hayden, F. E. Wilson, A. H. Johnstone, W. A. Collis W F. Short, P. J. Hill, S. J. Smith, and J. T Mannix. In regard to the regulation of cattle traffic in the borough, Cr.Hayden said he wished to remove a'n impression which had got abroad that the Council was preventing cattle from 'icing driven through the borough every day after nine o'clock in the morning, whereas this restriction only, applied to Sundays. The Mayor said lie had found, the same misapprehension to exist. On any day but Sunday cattle could be driven through the borough from daylight to dusk. "The matter of providing a stock route will have to be gone into," added Mr. Burgess, "but it cannot he done this year." Cr. Monteath thought; a stock route should be opened as- soon as possible and rather than it should be left for a year he hoped to see it provided by next summer. The provision of the route was an expenditure which, must be faced. He moved that the matter should be left in the hands of a sub-committee, consisting of Crs. Smith, Medley, and Collis. Cr. Short seconded this.

The Mayor said ho agreed that the question should be gone into now, but he strongly opposed this year's revenue being used for the purpose. Cr. Smith thought thia was a bigger question than councillors anticipated, and it would involve some thousands of pounds. He considered that the Mayor should be on the committee. The resolution was -barred, the Mayor being added to the committee. MOTOR LICENSE FEES. At the last meeting of the Council a deputation requested that the Council should not carry out its decision to increase the fees on motor 'buses and motor lories, and the matter was brought up for discussion.. It was decided to refer the whole question of traffic license 'fees to the By-Laws Committee.
