DISTRICT NEWS.
OMATA, (From Our Own Correspondent.) The local Patriotic Committee have reason to feci gratified with the result of their recent canvass of the district for assistance' to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. A very substantial amount in cash has been 'collected, whilst a large quantity of stock and other articles to be sold has. been doiiated. It is the committee's intention to hold a stock sale and "Fancy Fair" at the Omata liall on the 18th, and also a grand social in the evening.
It only remains for the Omata people on this occasion to act up to their'past reputation to enable the committee to raise an amount worthy of the cause. A hearty welcome to the' Fair is offered to all visitors from town and country, when the "fairest of our fair" will do their best to make the visit one of profit as well as pleasure.
After a prolonged spell of south-easter-ly winds, which will considerably hasten the rest which, her "majesty" the cow has coming to her, w« are now being treated to a few perfect days, which makes us forget all tiie nasty things Ave have thought and tried to say while being blown across the paddocks. TARATA. (From Our Own Correspondent).
Winter is fast approaching, but our district up to the present has experienced ideal weather. I noticed in your columns that several places report having had a second crop of apples this year. There is not an orchard in Tarata that has not had a similar'happening, and the apples of the second crop are well formed and plentiful. Dairy farmers are gradually drying off their cows, and the factory has commenced running every other day. A very successful and profitable season has been reported.
I hear that our local hall committee are going to build an up-to-date ladies' dressing room to the hall. This has been a long-felt want, and no doubt the ladies will appreciate it. The following pupils of the Tarata school have put in full attendances for the quarter ending March 31: Bell Mackie, John Mackic, Lena Taylor, Elie Plie, Jessie Crowe, David Crowe, Gordon Ludemann, and Waara Hoi Tukotalu. Mr. F.'M. Brightwell has sold his farm, and his clearing sale is to be held on Monday, May 20. Mr. R. Smith has been up from Trentham on final leave, and I also hear that four more Tarataites have enlisted for the front.
