'"Tt is the duty of the Government to see that there is sullicient butter retained in this country to meet the requirements of the New Zealand people.'' said the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. \\. 1 Massey) last evening, in answer to a question regarding the prohibition of the export of butter. The announcement has been made that butter may not be exported except by consent of the Minister for Customs, The Minister, added Mr. Massey, will ba guided by the reports concerning supplies and liy the state of the local market.
The retail price of the standard brands of butter in Wellington at the present time is Is (id per lb. It was reported in the city yesterday that a rise of Id per lb was probable, but the prohibition of export may have a steadying influence. The cool stores at the various ports are stated to contain about 00.000 boxes of bijAter at the present time, and in the light of this fact the exporters are not likely to miss the significance of the Government's action. I'he prohibition of export, except by consent of the Minister, is a clear indication that the local price has to be kept down,
