INTERESTING PAPERS READ. By Telegraph.—Press AssecUtion, Christehurcli, May 11. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engiseers was resumed to-day. A paper entitled "Rock-drills," by Mr. Alexander Dinnie, resident engineer at Arthur's Pass tunnel, was read. The paper described the drills in use in constructing Arthur's Pass tunnel, --'i nn interesting discussion on the technical character of drills chsued. ' Mr. Dinnie was tlianked for his valuable paper. Mr. A. W. Newton read a paper on "A cheap and simple method of metalling roads." It dealt with road metalling in the Hutt Valley. It stated that boulders, collected in the river, were crushed by a portable plant in the vicinity, the road being metalled at a cost of less than 3s per yard. The road gave satisfaction to motorists. An interesting discussion ensued in the course of which the members "gave their experience of road-making in different parts of the Dominion. The members inspected the School of Engineering in Canterbury College, the Addington workshops, and the Drainage Board's sewage farm at Bromley. During the visit to the Engineering School, Professor Scott said he could not show as much as he would like, as the senior students, about eighty in all, had left in a body for the front.
