Mr. w. M. Hughes, Federal Prime Minister, has received tin invitation to call at Capetown on his return journey. He will probably accept the invitation. At the Fitzroy Fire Brigade social last night, Foreman .*» 'enkins was presented with the United Fire Brigades Association's five.years service medal. One of Waikato's oldest and most respected residents died at Hamilton on Tuesday in the person of Mr. William Australia Graham, at the ago of 74 (reports tho Auckland Star). The Hon. Sir James Carroll hns telegraphed that he will be unable to visit Wellington before his departure for London as a member of the Parliamentary party. He will proceed from Ofcborn'e to Auckland, and join the steamer there. Mr. T. W. Fisher, Under-Secretary for Native Affairs, ivill retire on superannuation at the end of June, Mr. Fisher has occupied his present position for several years, but previous to taking over that appointment did <il»iblc service on behalf of the Public Trust Department in the administration of, ihe West Coast Settlement Reserves. At the annual communications of the Masonic Grand Lodge, held at Auckland this week, the following officers were elected for the Taranaki district: Grand Steward, W. Bro. E. \V. hj! Hainerton) Members of Board of General Purposes, W. Bro. F. W. Grainger; Member of Board of Benevolence, \V. Bro. W. N. Kwing. Bro. K. W. Sargent was «p----pointed Provincial Grand Master of Taranaki. , On Sunday morning, Air. John Turnbull, who was known as the "Father of Mnrrinsville," passed peacefully away at his residence there at the age of''B2. Deceased was born ji> Scotland and cam* to New Zealand in the ship Gertrude in 180,' i, at the time that the Maoris were giving the Colonial authorities a good deal of trouble, and he joined the militia, serving throughout the war. Tie first settled in Howick, but in 1874 he removed to the Waikato, to take pver the management of Mr. James Taylor's property at Kiwitahi, which 'comprised some 20,000 acres. Deceased remained in Kiwitahi managing the estate for about 25 years.
