SPORTING

EGMONT RACING CLUB, WINTER MEETING. SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY. Fine weather prevailed yesterday for the opening day of the Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting, which took place on the Hawera racecourse yesteiday. There was a large attendance, patrons coming from all parts of Taranaki and beyond Wanganui by rail, motor car, or horse-drawn vehicle, and there was an increase in the gate takings of £SO, An excellent day's sport was provided. The course and its appointments were all in first-class order, though the recent Tains bad caused the track to be somewhat holding. The fields were good and finishes were close, a tribute to the work of the handicaper, Mr. Geo. Morse, who succeeded in concealing the winners, the popular fancy only getting home on one occasion. The starter, Mr. C. O'Connor, despatched the horses well, whilst Mr. C. Hartgill in the judge's box hoisted the winning numbers very promptly. The totalisator handled £17,794, as against £15,893 10s on the first day last year, an increase of £l9Ol. The machine was in charge of Mr. 0. Callaghan, who had made complete arrangements for its efficient working. As usual the arrangements made by Mr. Turton, secretary, were very complete and the scribes present have to thank him and his officials for the promptitude with which the totalisator figures were forthcoming and for various other courtesies. Mr. J. McMahon, stipendiary steward, was present, but fcund no cause to hold, any enquiries. An excellent programme of music was rendered by Hutchen's Lyric Orchestra from the grandstand, and found an appreciative audience. Mr. E. Whittle had control of the refreshment booth, and the catering was in the hands of Dustins' Ltd. Results of the racing:—

'NOTES ON THE RACING, The racing opened with the Tongahoe Handicap Hurdles, for which a field of eight saddled up. The defections were Parawanui, Calais, Simple Sam, and Silver Rose. Lord Nelson was made favorite, Crown Pearl and Golden March being next in demand, the trio carrying threefourths of the money. Captain Miro and Patronymic were the 'first to show out, tho last named being replaced by Nita on entering the straight. At the siv furlongs Crown Pearl got close to the leader, and there was very little change, Captain Miro, Crown Pearl, Nita, and Patronymic fighting out the issue, the favorite being never prominent. Crown Pearl lost ground at the last jump and Patronymic, who came fast was enabled to get within three lengths of the- winner on whom young Johnson rode a fine race. Crown Pearl was three lengths further back, and then came Nita, Lord Nelson, and Golden March, with Royal Simon and Mahlstick last. ; Lost Angelos and Depredation were the withdrawals from the Tawhili Hack, leaving nine to face the barrier. Interlude was made favorite, Bisogne, Glenroy, Tirana, Veto, and Astor being well backed. After a false start, in which the favorite broke away, the field were evenlv dispatched. Tirana, on the rails, was first to show out, followed by Interlude, Astor, and Glenroy. At the four furlongs, Interlude ran to the front, and led into the straight followed by Tirana and Glenroy. "At the distance Interlude fell back and Glenroy assumed command, but Veto who had been lying handy, came with a great dash and got home in the last few strides by a neck. Tirana being half a length away. The scratching of Coropet and Lake Eel reduced the field to seven in the Railway Handicap, in which Antwerp was the popular fancy, carrying nearly as much as the next three, Golden Grafton, Hnupai, and Maid o' Gowrie. Sylviflroa had slightly the worst of a good start. Durane was first to show out followed by Golden Grafton, Maid o' Gowrie, Pergola, and Antwerp close up. At the back Antwerp ran into third place, and entered the straight just in front of a bunched field, but soon fell back. Haupai and Sylviaroa. here put in great bids and raced down the straight in line with Golden Grafton, but the latter retained command winning in a great finish by a good head, the third horse a neck away. Antwerp was close up fourth. Fifteen saddled- up for the Ladies' Purse, Nita, Captain Miro, and Conroy being the withdrawals. Parawanui, Conguard, and Normanby were backed in that order. After i little trouble at the barrier the field was dispatched to an even start. White Blaze, Carloinan, and Leah Kleshna led past the stand with Bercola in attendance. Racing round 'the back, Regio and Conguard closed u]), Leah Kleshna and Bercola falling back. White Blaze was never headed, and stalling off challenges by Conguard and Normanby passed the post a neck in front of the latter, Silenus being three lengths away, and Regio being fourth. Pergola was the only withdrawal from the Telegraph, in which Royal Chef was made the popular fancy, Depredation lie - ing next in demand. Royal Chef and Revocation were away together with Zion and Silver Web in that order. At the back Royal Chef drew away, and that was the end, winning- by four lengths, Coropet defeated Revocation by a length, Flying Camp being fourth. All carded started in the bisr race, which was a heavy betting one. - \\ T ani was madeifavoi-ite, Rewi IV" being next p about £4O less, and all Man-.iwa-kalia were well backed. From ;i good atari i Crawford was the first to break the line, and the order passing the stand was Crawford, Combustion, Rewi Poto, Harbor Light, and Want. This was maintained round the back, where Crawford slightly increased the lead, and at the turn Combustion fell back. Crawford entered the straight with a two lengths lead, which he maintained to the finish. Leonta, who came fast up the straight just failed to reach Rewi Poto by a short head. Ineuru was fourth and Harbor Light fifth. White Blaze was withdrawn from the Waihi Handicap, leaving a field of six. ; In a heavy betting race Analogue ear- , ried a third of the money, more than 1 double, as much as Black Ada, who was . next in demand. Black Ada was the . first to show out, but was soon dis- . placed by St. Kiel, who lead the way at the back, followed by Black Ada, Ticino and Belle Paul. The field here closed up, and at the turn Black Ada bad again assumed command, but in the run home ■ was beaten by half a length by Ticino, ( Analogue displacing ,St. Kiel for third ' place.

TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting will be concluded to-day, and the first day's success should be repeated. The chief events to-day are the Manaia Handicap (one mile and a distance) and the Mokoia Handicap (six furlongs). The racing promises to be interesting and tli« attendance large. Last year the Manaia Handicap was won by Maniaroa, after a great race with Princess Moutoa and Avon !F"ark, separating the trio. O'Shca Im.i I.in* mount on the winner that day, I and he rode one of his best races. The Mokoia Handicap was won by Playoff, who won rather easily from Crown Pearl, with Astor almost in line. Playoff was piloted by Deeley, and was in receipt of 181b from Crown Pearl. El Gallo won his first hurdle race at the Egmont winter meeting last year, and then went on and won t'he (srea.t Northerns directly afterwards. There was nothing of' the same class racing there yesterday, and not even Captain Miro could be labelled dangerous in swell company. Todd Bells and Rexicordium got on the winning list at the Waikato trots, Todd Bells getting away with the principal event. . Daylight Bill, winner of tfhe last Wanganui Steeplechase, will be given another chance to distinguish himself in the same event this year. In addition, llr. D. Rutherford will be represented by Mescal and Free at the Wanganui meeting. IPrior to the Egmont meeting J. O'S'hea was credited with fi-1 firsts. His most dangerous opponent, C. Emerson, had ridden 55. Weights for the Wanganui winter meeting are due to-morrow. It was suggested to a .jockey who was fast putting on weight that he might do all right over the big fences. He had one look at. the obstacles, and then said, "No dash fear. If a 'bloke got a spill at one of those he might be knocked sensible!" Heard on the course: "What do yon think of that? And lie told me, his horse was a goer. 'Lumme, ttie thieving 'ound would take a dead fly from a blind spider!"
