Wheat.—Quiet and steady, with little demand for cargoes; Chicago May options 111} cents to 113J cents, July 112g cents to 114J cents. Wheat and flour afloat.—United Kingdom, 3.475,000 quarters, Continent 4,185,000 quarters; Atlantic shipments 807,000 quarters, Pacific nil; total for Europe, 1,615,000 quarters, Argentine 277,000 quarters, Australasia 189,000 quarters. The Bank- of New Zealand reports:— The London wool sales closed firm, as compared with the March closing. Crossbreds, fine unchanged, medium coarse 5 per cent, to 7$ per cent, dearer; merinos, superior per cent, dearer, inferior 15 per cent, dearer; crossbreds, coarse Is 5Jd to Is 6d, medium Is 6Jd to Is 7d, fine Is BJd to Is 9d; merinos, superior 1b BJd to Is 9d, inferior Is 3d; halfbred, Is 9d to Is lOd. BRITISH TRADE. London, May 6. Imports have increased £2,046,780 and exports £4,648,106'; re-exports have decreased £1,863,605. TARANAKI WOOL, SKIN, HIDE AND TALLOW SALES. MR. NEWTON KING'S REPORT. At my four-weekly sale of the above produce on May 2, I catalogued 63 bales and 98 sacks of wool, 1650 sheepskins, 8 casks and 21 tins tallow, 450 hides and 186 calfskins. There was a larger attendance of buyers than usual and competition was very keen. 'Prices for wool were on a par with last sale. Soifnd pelted woolly skins advanced ly 2 d, tallow advanced £1 per ton. Owing to the embargo being lightened, hides met with a spirited demand and advanced by lV*d to iy 2 d.i Cow hides sold as high as ll%d per lb. This price was obtained by Mr. Clarry, of Eltham, whose lot at this price realised £3 ftj 8d the hide. I quote:— Wool—Fleece, in bales, ll%d to i.3d, lambs 12d to 12y 2 d, seedy to lid, washed ll'/id; in sacKs,' fleece O'/od to l?.y 3 d, lambs 6%d to ll%d, crutchings B>/ 2 d to -fli/gd, dead 9%d to ll'/ 2 d, black fi'/ 2 d, locks and pieces 5d to 7y 2 d. Sheepskins,—Crossbred 9Jd to IOJd, lambs lid, half-wools lO'/id, quarterwools Bd, lamb pelts 6%d, pelts 3d to 6%d. damaged pelts iy 3 d to 4y 4 i, dead and damaged Od to S%d, skin pieces 4d to 7d; damp lines, heavy 8s lid to lis, half-wools 5s lOd to fls lOd, quarterwools 3s lOd to 4s 6d, lambs 4s lOd to 6s 6d. Salted lines: Half-wools 5s 6d to 6s fid, quarter-wools 3s lid to 4s 3d, pelts is Bd. Tallow—ln casks, 26s 3d to 28s 3d; in tins, 22s 3d to 2Ss.
Hides—Cow, stout ll%d, heavy 9%d to lO'/jjd, medium fl'/ 2 d to 10»/ 4 d. light »Vid to 10y 4 d, farmers' 8d to !)i/ s d, cut or slippy o%d to 6%d, horse 6s to 10s, yearlings 7%d to 9>/ B d, cut or slippy 6d to %d.
Calfskins—Sound 7%d to 9y 4 d, cut and slippy srt to 7%d. Bones, £5 per ton. Horse hair, Is 3d per lb, Cowhair, G'/od per lb. Cowtails, Is per dozen.
