THE COST OF LIVING. RIOTS IN BERLIN, AMBASSADORS LEAVE. Amsterdam, May 7. There were riots in Berlin owing to butchers concealing and refusing to sell meat. Officials made a search, which revealed a large quantity, which was forthwith sold publicly, and the shops thereafter closed. Crowds endeavored to wreck the premises. The greatest disturbances were at Wilmersdorf, where the military were called out and traffic suspended for some hours. Amsterdam, May 7. The Brazilian and other Ministers at Berlin have gone with their families to Switzerland owing to the exorbitant prices of food, especially of milk and eggs. THE REPLY TO AMERICA; WRITTEN BY THE KAISER. Amsterdam, May 7. German newspapers state that the Kaiser wrote the entire reply to the American Note.
The Cologne Gazette says the Kaiser could not mate any other decision than trusting us to make a sacrifice and swallowing his justified anger. The responsibility of the final decision was serious.
