RECRUITING.

CLIFTON* COUXTY COUNCIL.

At the meeting of the Clifton County Council oil Friday a letter was read from Rt. Hon. \V. l'\ Masscy, chairman of the Recruiting Board, acknowledging receipt of the Council's letter, and noting that while the Council was still of opinion that some form of compulsion should be introduced, it would do all in its power to revise and amplify the local roll for the Clifton County. He added: "The Refruiting Board has received ample proof that in every district where the new scheme been brought into operation a marked improvement in recruiting has icsulted, and sufficient men have been secured to provide for the present and future quotas required of those districts. It is evident from what has already been reported to the Board that there are many eligible men who have not yet realised the seriousness of the present call, and who only need the personal appeal to make them do so. I would therefore impress 011 your Council the urgent necessity of at once organising committees ,'ll your district and seeing that this work is dewo, because otherwise the compulsion, which your Council so strongly favors, cannot be enforced on a fair and equitable basis." A telegram was also received from the Croup Commander at Hawera asking for information as to what committees were working in the district, and particularly as to whether the personal canvass scheme had been adopted. It was decided to reply that no personal canvass had been made, but that members of the Council were taking the steps necessary to check the national register.
